A Little Flurry of Sony News

Sonyalpharumors.com has upped the odds of the A7 III being announced tomorrow (26FEB2018) to 75%.  Of course the calculus of rumor mongering is far from an exact science, but in this case I think he’s probably right.  And just to sweeten the occasion Sigma has announced an FE mount lens.  It is an Art Series 105mm f/1.4.  And it looks like a beast with its own tripod mount.  Looking toward the horizon I hope after the announcement it won’t take long to learn if this new camera has good autofocus.  One interesting development in the rumor is the fact that the autofocus system has more contrast detect points than phase detect ones.  This continues a change in direction from the A9 which had many more phase detect than contrast.  I’ve always thought the contrast detect points were much less functional so I see this as a bad sign.  Time will tell.

I dunno, the following quote is from LensRentals.com

“The Sony a7R III boasts some killer specs. On the inside, it has a new Fast Hybrid AF System which is supposedly two times quicker than the Sony a7R II and more accurate. While the two cameras share the same amount of Phase Detect autofocus points (399) the A7R III has 400 MORE contrast detect points to aid in focusing. Using the cameras back to back, the A7R III is indeed noticeably quicker and more accurate.”

From my limited reading, phase and contrast systems both have photo situations where is one type is demonstrably superior to the other and vice versa. Hence, the “hybrid” system. I’d be willing to bet that the to-be-announced A7III will have essentially the same focus system as the A7RIII.

I’ve had an A7RII for 6 months and can tell you exactly where I think the Achilles heel of that system lies: the battery. That has been remedied in the latest, I hear. With my old A850, I’d think nothing of going out of town for several days knowing I was going to shoot many hundreds shots with no spare battery and not a worry. When I shot our local Mardi Gras a couple of weeks ago, I got a “battery exhausted” message and a shutdown about 2 hours in. I haven’t had complaints with the focus system. My A7RII isn’t as fast as my A6300 is but I understand that the new A7 series autofocus is based on the 6300/6500 system, though it’s noteworthy to have the premier system trailing the downmarket stuff.

But I will guarantee you that with the A7 whatever III, the autofocus will be in a different universe that your current series I stuff.

Well, you’ve given me some extra hope. But I’m definitely waiting until I’ve rented it and know the score. But if it turns out to be good I’ll give it a full review.

The Sony A V.III will probably come in 3 flavors same as the V.II: the R with a 42.4 MP sensor, the S such as you have now, optimized for video and low light and the A7, which will be full frame but with a smaller MP count than the R version.

    Which are you thinking of?

I’m thinking of the 24 mp A7. But I’ll consider the trade-offs with respect to the other differences.
