04AUG2018 – Quote of the Day

“Of all the classes of men, I dislike the most those who make their livings by talking – actors, clergymen, politicians, pedagogues, and so on. …. It is almost impossible to imagine a talker who sticks to the facts. Carried away by the sound of his own voice and the applause from the groundlings, he makes inevitably the jump from logic to mere rhetoric.”

H. L. Mencken

That is an interesting quote for a blogger to post

Yes. And I guess I use it in the same humble or ironical or self-deprecatory but hopefully not self-unaware manner that Menchen must have used it in. But I see what he means. He’s saying walking the walk trumps talking the talk.

Since I started doing daily quotes back in February I have come to realize that worthwhile sayings are in short supply. One of my readers, Tom, is a Mencken fan and I was glad to see that H. L. has many amusing if somewhat acerbic quotes to choose from. So this is his week (or so).

How about this quote?: “Consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds”

Emerson will just have to wait his turn. Tom, if you remember, you mentioned Mencken a few months ago. He certainly is relevant in the present circumstances. What would he have thought of Obama?
