Without fear there is no courage. For me to cross a city street is not courageous as I do not fear to do so. However, for someone afflicted with agyrophobia (I have known one such person) to cross a busy street would be like asking me to run naked through a cage of starving tigers while smeared in bacon grease.

Almost every hero you’ve ever heard of was scared to death when he or she performed their acts of valor. Courage is going on despite fear. Overcoming that fear sometimes leads to a berserker mindset. It does not mean they are not afraid, but they have pumped themselves up with adrenaline to overcome the shakes. After the battle, they will get the shakes. Happened to me in my first firefight. I was so afraid going in that my guts were tied in knots and my knees wobbled. But when the shooting began I sort of went into beast mode. After the fight, I had my first cigarette, as tobacco will calm your nerves and helps you deal with the precipitous adrenaline drop. I also noticed I was not the only one with a pee spot in the front of his trousers.

Being a veteran soldier does not mean avoiding fear, it means better managing fear.

For most people courage has become almost a theoretical concept. We’re so insulated from physical danger that we almost don’t remember what it’s like to be mortally afraid. That probably will come back to bite us in the foreseeable future.
