Here’s a wildlife shot to guess at. Whose tooth is this? A tiger? A saber-tooth tiger? A rattlesnake? A vampire bat? A regular vampire? A dinosaur? That creepy monster from Alien? Take a guess.

I’m going to guess it’s a tarantula’s fang. Shudder!
I agree, an arachnid, likely a spider. Reptilian and mammalian teeth are whitish.
After I responded to this photo last night, I started looking up tarantulas, and I’m even more convinced it’s a tarantula’s fang, which is part chitin, and part metallic, interestingly enough.
Tyler, you and War Dog are very perceptive. Look at my follow up post for the scary details.
Thanks! I totally missed the follow-up post until you mentioned it here.
Tarantulas are truly amazing (and terrifying) creatures. I’ve been doing a deep dive into tarantulas ever since seeing this picture.
Tyler, I’m glad it sparked your interest. I’ve kept a lot of strange pets including coconut crabs and giant millipedes but I’ve never kept any tarantulas. They are impressively fierce looking. For that reason I thought it would make a good subject for macro-photography.
Good call! Did you take this photograph? Where did you find the tarantula? I sure want to open my toilet to one of these bad boys.
Yes I took a series of about two hundred frames that were stacked by a program so that all the areas in focus are combined into a composite. It’s a preserved specimen I got commercially.
Very cool! Also, I meant to write “I sure DON’T want to open my toilet to one of these bad boys.” That’s what I get for doing something in a hurry. It’s been crazy the past few days.
Crazy is right. They just declared a state of emergency in Massachusetts and everyone is panicking. Apparently we’re going to run out of everything any minute now.
Geeze, this coronavirus stuff is way overblown—the media tanking the economy to wound Trump. I worry about my parents, who are older, and my younger brother, who has an IGA immune deficiency. But I think it’s just a worse version of the flu.
That said, I did stock up on a LOT of spaghetti, rice, and Ramen noodles, so I can ride out any quarantines with lots of empty calories.
We’re about to find out how virulent Covid-19 actually is.
