The first snake of the year in the field. As usual it’s an eastern garter snake. Last year we saw a northern water snake and an eastern milk snake. Hopefully this year we’ll see some of the rarer species.

Beautiful creatures, as long as they aren’t in my house or yard. We always get a couple in the school every year. One year it was a rattlesnake–yikes!

The natural fear of snakes is less pronounced here because nn New England the native venomous snakes have been reduced to a level that means the average person will never encounter one in his lifetime. In fact, the local environmental loons here are actively trying to restock certain areas with them. Luckily even the average New England progressive still has enough instinct for self preservation to know this is a bad idea.
Geeze, that is truly INSANE. The local ecology will get along fine without venomous snakes.
Yeah, some people don’t know when they’ve gone too far. It would be like releasing small pox back into the world for the sake of natural balance.
