I wouldn’t say Washington was committed to liberty, he held slaves, but he was better than Napoleon.
This was a Frenchman and he was thinking about Napoleon going from general of a republic to emperor. Washington went from general of a republic to president to retired president. I think a lot of Europeans thought Napoleon was going to give them their freedom back. They were more than disappointed.
