The Russians have pushed the Ukrainian troops out of the last of the high rise buildings in the west of Bakhmut. Currently the Ukrainians are contesting areas north and south of the city. There are estimates that the Ukrainian forces west of Bakhmut number between 10,000 and 30,000. There is speculation that instead of the Ukrainian counter-offensive occurring in the south it might instead occur around Bakhmut.
The video footage I’ve seen of the city as it currently exists is shocking. If Bakhmut had received a one megaton nuclear detonation at the center of the city it would not look any more devastated than it currently does. Except for the skeletons of a few high rise buildings at the western edge, it’s been reduced to pulverized rubble.
What’s going on there is madness. This is civil war.

This is not civil war. This is total war in the 21st century. This is just the beginning; you cannot run or hide. In the end the drones will seek out and destroy all. .
It is total war. They’re fighting over rubble. It’s a war of extermination.
Our country has not seen total war since our civil war. Crack open the history books and look at pictures of Richmond and Petersburg. Then follow Shermans march to the sea.
Agreed. This is total war. This is the way the Russians fight wars – they destroy everything and kill everyone. For the last 30 years, the world has seen how the US fights wars: Surgical strikes, devastating accuracy and minimal collateral damage. This is not the norm but the exception.
War is horrible and to be avoided at all costs. Apparently, the world needs to be taught the lesson every few decades.
Well, the Russians have given a master class. That high rise buildings of that city were reinforced with concrete to act as a fortress and the Wagner forces cleared it building by building using a combination of artillery and storming parties. The losses on both sides must have been considerable. And when the day is done there is nothing left there but rubble. But as you say war is horrible.
