Today I was rooting around on YouTube and found this audio version of one of Heinlein’s short stories from “The Green Hills of Earth” collection; “Gentlemen, Be Seated.”
I haven’t read that story in fifty years. Unsurprisingly it’s still a good story. Nimoy’s voice sounds very un-Spock-like. I think he does a very decent job.
As a young lad in the 70’s I was hooked on the Science Fiction masters. I read all of them voraciously, books were my friends and constant companions.
I, too, read the masters with zeal. I almost taught myself to read with the pulps. Bug-eyed monsters on the cover and all. Heinlein, E E Smith, Clarke, Asimov, Bradbury, Anderson, Norton, etc. I picked my teeth with Heinlein’s juveniles and went on from there. Wherever we lived, the local public library was treasure to me. Scifi and dinosaur books consumed my early years. I got into Big Little Books and Zane Grey westerns by reading dad’s books.
Print was my constant companion as a child and still is today, although mostly by electronic print. Kindle is my friend.
Ah, the good old days. When science fiction was a hopeful land and not an excuse for neo-Marxist struggle sessions about racialist angst and dysfunctional sexuality.
