Even the commercials were better back in the old days when we were allowed to be happy. The guys writing the commercials could write clever lyrics and even add a spritely tune for good measure. Now? Not so much.
Maybe President Trump can make MAGA also mean “Make Ads Great Again.”
I remember this on the first run watching them on our B&W TV.
There were still some clever people in our advertising and entertainment industries. Now, we’re down to low-grade morons.
I remember that. But I also remember watching late night movies that had 6 minutes of commercials for every 4 minutes of programming toward the last 25% of the movie.
Now, I haven’t watched commercial TV in 14 years but I read a lot.
Well, recently I was watching a tv show without having pre-recorded it so I had to watch the commercials. Nine out of ten of them were pharma ads and they were bizarre and depressing. Even the occasional makeup or fashion ad was almost unwatchable. Sometimes I couldn’t even tell what the ad was for. So I figured I’d put something I felt was more entertaining up for everyone’s perusal.
“Where’s the Beef”
“Mikey hates everything.”
Slinky walking down stairs.
“Don’t squeeze the Charmin”.
Sugar Bear singing like Dean Martin
Rice-a-Roni being the San Fran treat. (I never saw it on a menu there nor was I offered it in a private home).
“Things go better with Coke.”
“Candy coated popcorn, peanuts and a prize…that’s what you get in Cracker Jack.”
“I’m a pepper, you’re a pepper.”
Petula Clark singing “It’s the radial age” about tires.
That was the golden age of advertising. Now are the dark ages.
The Hershey’s kisses Christmas commercial is still good.
Of course, they haven’t changed it since 1989.
