The Rust Belt Stands Pat

Back in May I read Salena Zito’s book “The Great Revolt: Inside the Populist Coalition Reshaping American Politics,” in which she interviewed a varied sample of Trump voters in the rust belt and identified why they abandoned the Democrat Party.

Well, in this article she went and checked back with these same voters to see if they had changed their minds.  Apparently their resolve is even stronger than in 2016 that Trump is their man.  And this jibes with the polls taken in these vitally important states.  Formerly, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin were part of the Great Lakes Blue Wall that would prevent any Republican from ever entering the White House again.  But instead of adding Ohio to that Blue Wall it looks like Minnesota may be turning red instead. That would complete the Red Wall from Lake Erie to Lake Superior.  Or let us say from the Atlantic Ocean in Philadelphia to the Mississippi River at Lake Itasca in Minnesota.  Apparently the demographic future we’ve all heard so much about isn’t quite there yet.

Zito is a personal writer.  Her story isn’t about statistics.  It’s about individual people.  It’s like the Trump rallies.  There’s a personal connection.

Michael Anton Analyzes the Impeachment Strategy and Summarizes the Possible Outcomes

In his sixty two hundred (!) word essay “The Empire Strikes Back” Michael Anton narrates the Deep State and Democrat controlled Media’s Ukraine-gate maneuver and how it’s supposed to justify impeachment and removal of President Trump.  Suffice it to say it is ponderous to read through the machinations they are going through to justify their treason and depressing to realize what nakedly illegal practices of their own they are trying to protect with the smokescreen of impeachment.  The Deep State and the Elites feed from the trough of federal spending that is funneled to lawless countries like the Ukraine.

I won’t attempt to even summarize his essay.  If you have an interest in these matters, which I do, you might read it.  But I’d like to quote some ideas from his conclusion.  Anton thinks that it is unlikely that even the craven Senate Republicans would be stupid enough to convict the President.  But if they did, he had this to say about the consequences:

“And it might. It worked against Nixon. It almost worked against Reagan. But let’s be clear: if it works this time, there are only three possible outcomes:

First, deplorable-Americans will meekly accept President Trump’s removal, in which case the country as a self-governing republic will be finished; the elite coup will have succeeded, their grip on power cemented. With all due respect to the vice president, this is not the way—these are not the people on the backs of whom—he should wish to enter the Oval Office. And I am confident he will not.

Second, deplorable-Americans will revolt at the ballot box and punish the elites in a series of elections that put in power serious statesmen intent on rooting out corruption and reestablishing democratic accountability.

Or, third, deplorable-Americans’ attempt to set their government aright via ballots will not avail, as it has not so often in the past; they will realize that it has not, conclude that it never will, and resolve by any means necessary to get out from under the thumbs of people who so obviously hate them and wish to rule them without their consent.”

That third outcome is the Dissident Right’s refrain, “we can’t vote our way out of this.”

And as to the outcome for the Senate Republicans if they did convict the President:

“Oh, and let’s also be clear about something else: if the Republicans “collude” with this sham and force the removal of a president whose approval rating within his party hovers north of 90%, and whose voters scarcely understand—much less agree with—the “case” against him, they will destroy the party forever. I don’t often make predictions, because I’m not good at it, but this one is easy. They will have removed all doubt that they are anything but ruling class apparatchiks, adjuncts, and flunkies of the administrative state from which they take orders.

And let none of them dare gaslight us with the trite dismissal that Trump’s removal would not overturn the 2016 election results because the president’s replacement was also elected. Trump’s intraparty enemies hate him, and wish to be rid of him, precisely because he is not one of them, because he stands for, and represents, something fundamentally different. Getting rid of him is, for them, a way to get back to business as usual. But there is no going back. A few of them in safely anti-Trump states or districts may survive the president’s removal but the vast majority will not. A new party—a Trumpian populist-nationalist party—will arise from the Republican Party’s ashes. More blue-collar in economic orientation and less in hock to coastal and financial elites, it will do a better job of attracting Democrats and independents—possibly pointing the way to the first real national majority coalition since the Reagan era. And that new party will not welcome the traitors, who will have to make do with contributorships on CNN and MSNBC. Assuming any slots are available.”

This assessment seems quite likely.  And the Senator I’d most enjoy seeing bounced out of his seat is Mitt Romney.  I would hope that Utah would enact a recall law specifically to remove him if he were stupid enough to aid in the removal of a popular president.  In fact, even if the conviction is unsuccessful, if Romney votes for it, I hope the people of his state remove him for that alone.

Anton worked for the Trump White House in addition to being an academic.  He is almost uniquely positioned to discuss the reality of our present situation.  What I find interesting is that even a mainstream and serious commentator such as Anton is now pointing to the apocalyptic realities of what would happen if the Uni-party Establishment decides they can overturn the 2016 election results by removing a popular president.  What that tells me is that the intelligentsia on the actual right has reached the same boiling point as the rest of us.  When a policy wonk joins the Deplorables it won’t be long before the pitchforks and the torches start showing up on the scene.

William Barr and the Deplorables

William Barr has lived his whole life as part of the elite.  From the day he was born his family has ensured that he went to the best schools and was considered for career opportunities in government and corporate circles that no one but the rich and highly connected are ever considered for.

Probably the only things I’ll say about William Barr that strike me as promising are that he worked in the Reagan White House and he considered Roe v Wade as an unconstitutional decision.  And if you happen to hate music you may be cheered by the fact that he is an avid bagpiper.

My only point to this description is that William Barr doesn’t scream deplorable to me.  In recent posts I’ve stated that only time will tell whether he is an honest public servant or a firewall meant to close out the Mueller investigation without any chance for payback.

His recent statements to Congress describing the Russia-gate strategy as the Obama administration “spying” on the Trump campaign have touched off a firestorm among Democrats.  But reviewing his statements they are actually pretty bland in their sizing up of the FBI’s behavior.  They in no way inspire me to think that Barr is out for blood from the conspirators.

So, when a friend of mine came up to me on Wednesday and started smiling and asking me whether I had seen Barr’s testimony I was truly surprised.  This friend of mine is, to say the least, a pessimist when it comes to the Trump Administration in general and who specifically is convinced that in the DOJ, the fix is always in.  But that day he was bubbling with enthusiasm and pretty convinced that Barr is getting ready to nail some FBI hides to the barn door.  Now, why would this be?  Does he know something I don’t?  It doesn’t seem so.

Thinking about this encounter afterwards, I couldn’t decide whether he was over enthusiastic or I was too cautious.  But even if all this means nothing in terms of the substance of what Barr will do, I think it says something important about the bigger picture among the Deplorables.  I think they are starting to believe they can win.  I think they are starting to realize that President Trump can win re-election and the Right may get another shot at cleaning up the mess we are in.  But mostly I think they are thinking that some of the Swamp Dwellers may be going to prison.  They really, really like the sound of that.  That was the single most important result that my friend took out of Barr’s statement.  He thought that Barr was telegraphing his intention to punish the Comeys and the Clappers of the world.  And he always returned at the end to his greatest hope that somehow it would go back all the way up the line to Obama.  It almost sounded like a prayer.

Well.

So now I’m the pessimist.  I don’t think for a minute that Obama will ever even have to talk to a prosecutor or even a Congressional Panel on this sort of thing.  If Barr ever demonstrates that he’s serious about punishing the Russia-gate crew I would hope that he’d go after the low hanging fruit first and scoop up McCabe, Comey and Clapper.  They’ve been so careless in their statements and actions that a blind man could follow that trail of bread crumbs back to their feet.  And squeezing them would be the surest way to go after the bigger fish like Mueller and Loretta Lynch.

And I have no proof that Barr will ever do anything.  I wouldn’t bet a dollar on anything ever coming out of the AG’s investigations.  I have a total wait and see attitude.

But I will say that the fact that the Deplorables are getting enthusiastic, in and of itself, is a positive development.  And that development leads me to predict that better days are definitely here and that as these things usually go, we can expect even more good news in the short to medium range.  Why, it wouldn’t surprise me to hear that some piece of bad news will be popping up about one or the other of the Left’s favorites.  Something like the Joe Biden comedy last week, only bigger and more hilarious.

So, there’s my reading of the entrails or the tea leaves or whatever your favorite fortune telling substrate happens to be.  Happy days are here again.  Go forth and rejoice.  I so decree.

Oh, on a side note I did read that Barr’s father did write a couple of science fiction books.  I’ll add a teaspoon of weight in his son’s favor just because that does indicate a tiny possibility of common humanity in there somewhere.  Maybe I’ll even read them to see if he’s any good.

Good Grief! Another Book I Have To Read! The Great Revolt by Selena Zito

The link is to an article by the author giving the fifty cent summation of her book.  Well, here’s more sleep deprivation for yours truly.  This book rightly concentrates on the people who voted Trump in and looks at the constituency instead of the man who figured out it was there.  Should be an interesting read if it is substantive.  After all if all that is needed is a simple why then I can answer that.  It’s because the Left was trying to bury us.

American Greatness Article – Welcome to the New Class Warfare by Steven J. Allen

This is not a news article.  It’s just tying together the time line and the logic of the Left’s (and the Elitist Right’s) targeting of the working-class whites as the enemy.  It is a good summation, almost a manifesto of “who they are,” as their elitist hero would put it.  I liked it.  It identifies the enemies and their target.

Welcome to the New Class Warfare

2017: The Dawn of the Age of the Deplorables

As I noted in my previous post, I spent a very nice week and a half relaxing and enjoying the Christmas holiday.  As part of that I read an awful lot of right wing and sort of right wing commentary.  And it occurred to me that things are definitely looking up on our side of the blogosphere.  Christmas Eve I watched the beginning of this five hour (!) set of interviews.

The host Stefan Molyneux has a series of videos where he interviews people about politics, philosophy, religion and life.  Ostensibly this series of interviews are about Christmas.  But that’s a jumping off point in some cases to discuss the year just passed and the new year coming up.  If you are not familiar with most of these people then I’ll say that they are spread across a continuum of ideologies starting on the left at about what used to pass for a liberal (but now would be too mild for the left today) all the way to some pretty hard core alt-right types.  Happily, for me, none of them here have joined the goose-stepping lunatics that abut this political neighborhood a little too closely for comfort.  But they are all unapologetic in their scorn for social justice warriors, America-haters and other lefty lunatic types that reflexively attack all things normal and good.  Some of them are not Trump fans, others came around by the end and some were predicting his win a year, ago.  But all of them are part of the new media.  They have cast their lot with the new way of reaching the people.  They run their own businesses and have their own audiences and get paid for telling a side of the story that the main stream media doesn’t tell.  They are more interesting and more relevant than most of what Fox provides and a thousand times better than the nonsense on CNN, ABC, NBC or CBS.  It’s very hard to predict if any of these folks will survive the brutal competition that exists in the media environment today.  I hope they do.  They inject humor and wit and points of view that aren’t permitted to exist on the network shows.  And interestingly they seem to be plugged into some of the trends that everyone else missed this year.  If that fact indicates a better grasp on what really will be happening in the near future, then maybe they’ll thrive.  I recommend that if you’re interested in what different voices are saying about our changing world then look around and see what’s going on.  You may be pleasantly surprised.  After all these are the deplorables that that Hillary warned us about and you remember how well that worked out for her!
