Reason 2,411 for Why Donald Trump Has Made America Greater – Stephen Colbert Cancelled

Stephen Colbert hates Donald Trump.  He has said incredibly vile things about him both in and out of office.  So, it must be especially satisfying for Trump to know that his term in office will outlast Colbert’s television show.  And that is a feeling I also share.  I think Colbert is an unfunny comedian and a joyless culture warrior of the Left who preaches a woke agenda endlessly and boringly.

Years ago, he was Jon Stewart’s straight man on the Daily Show when both of them tried to make Barack Obama seem cool.  Now he’s Dave Letterman’s failed replacement on the Late Show and he’s managed to kill off his side of late-night comedy.

Now granted, his $15 million salary is a big part of why the Late Show is being ended.  Broadcast and cable television no longer make much money.  An aging viewing audience and the pharmaceutical companies that advertise to them are reaching the ends of their roads.  By replacing Colbert, Kimmel and Fallon with cheaper talent (or forcing them to take a huge reduction in salary) the networks can probably get another three or four years out of this set-up but essentially late-night comedy is no longer a thing.

But that shouldn’t stop me from enjoying guys like Colbert and Stewart (yeah, him too) getting the old heave-ho.  By splitting their audience into Left and Right their viewership tanked and their employers lost a lot of money.

Now Fox has positioned Greg Gutfeld as the competition for Colbert and the rest of the unfunny late-night hosts.  And he’s killing them in the ratings because ABC, CBS and NBC have to split the same 50% of the audience while Fox gets 100% of the other half.  But more importantly I think he’s only making a fraction of what they make in salary and he appears on two or three different shows on the network.

Now the real innovation may happen when someone decides to be funny to 100% of the audience.  In other words, try actual comedy and make fun of everyone equally.  It used to work quite well in the old days before women, minorities and sexual deviants were declared sacred cows and placed off limits from mockery leaving only straight white men as the only punchlines for unfunny comics.

Well, anyway, we won’t have Stephen Colbert to kick around anymore.  But there is a rumor that MSNBC or whatever they’re going to call that place may hire Colbert to do what Rachel Maddow currently does but for less money.  This seems far-fetched but who knows.  When price tag becomes the most important consideration new possibilities open up.  How about Keith Olbermann?  He used to be Rachel Maddow in the old days and he doesn’t make any money at all presently.  If they gave him anti-depressants and shaving supplies, I think he’d jump aboard again.  And maybe after Whoopi Goldberg gets canned from “The View” she might be available for MSNBC.  Of course, if feeding her was part of the deal that could be costly.

Well, anyway, today was a wonderful day.  And if the recission bill gets approved in the House on Friday that will be a wonderful day too.

Theater of the Absurd

If ten years ago you had told me that the most interesting television presidential interview would be Greg Gutfeld and Donald Trump, I would have said, “Greg who?” followed by, “You mean the guy from The Apprentice?”

But Gutfeld provides Trump with one of the only television spaces where he’s not fending off attacks from so-called journalists.  Now I don’t count the Hannity type infomercial.  It’s too phony for anyone to take seriously.  And surprisingly, Trump doesn’t seem at ease when he sits down with Tucker Carlson for whatever reason.

With Gutfeld and his panel of goofballs Trump seems jovial and loose which is when he’s at his best.  And Gutfeld has a decent sized audience for cable tv.  I’ve been watching Gutfeld on and off since his “Red Eye” days.  He’s basically a libertarian but he doesn’t attack the Right much anymore so he’s relatively benign.  Good to see Trump getting a platform.

Now Gutfeld is Stealing My Best Gags

Here’s a Claudine Gay / Urkel gag from Gutfeld’s show last night

And here is my post from Dec. 21st 2023.  Below is the photo from the post.

Claudine Gay Accused of Stealing Steve Urkel’s Look

Coincidence?  I don’t think so!  Damn you Gutfeld!  The Urkel meme is one of my best.

Ah, fate is cruel.  Well, at least he steals from the best.

Update:

I’ve called Gutfeld out.  I’ve demanded on-air attribution.

Gutfeld Breaks Through the Late Night Comic Ratings Game

I started watching Greg Gutfeld back in 2010 when he had his 3 am comedy Red Eye on Fox News.  With his small ensemble of regulars and a bunch of Fox News and right-wing and libertarian guests the show was an incredibly refreshing change from the lefty late night hosts that had already become too unbearable to listen to.

It was obviously a show that was produced on a shoestring budget and existed without any of the heavyweight advantages that the networks can provide to an entertainment show.  We weren’t going to see any movie stars or top echelon politicians on this show.  Instead you had a folded newspaper with paper eyes taped on used as a ventriloquist dummy while one of the cast represented the views of the New York Times in a silly voice.  Or there would be a video of robots in their parents’ basement, reciting the talking points of George Soros’ Media Matters in a cadence that sounded like HAL in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

This was not a show that could compete with The Tonight Show or even Conan O’Brien.  I even remember a clip of David Letterman making fun of Greg’s name and calling him a nobody.  But it was often very funny.  Gutfeld was a social liberal by all appearances.  I’d say he was a libertarian.  But he wasn’t attacking the Right.  After a few years when the show ran out of steam and several of the regulars left so did I.  But my impression was that Gutfeld was not against us and was doing the best he could to speak to more than the left side of America.  And for that I give him credit.

In the last few years Gutfeld has been ubiquitous on Fox News.  He’s a regular on their talk show “The Five.”  And he now has his own late night comedy show that is much better supported by the network than Red Eye was.  And after viewing a few episodes I see that Gutfeld knows where his audience is.  I don’t doubt he’s still the same guy but he’s towing the line and giving Donald Trump his due.  And that’s good.  Gutfeld is far enough to the right of the rest of Hollywood and the Media to be considered one of us.  I wouldn’t want him deciding policy but I’m more than happy to see him telling jokes on a late night show.  After all Johnny Carson was probably a liberal.  But he tried to be an equal opportunity mocker of the left and the right.  I can live with that.

Now that Gutfeld is making real headway I hope Fox News supports him and provides whatever leverage they can to get him good guests.  Who knows maybe one day he can have Donald Trump on the show.  That show I’d watch.

So good luck to Greg.  He’s the only one of those comics worth spit.  Hopefully he can showcase a lot of the little comics on our side.  That would be a worthwhile endeavor.  Build our own platforms.
