Things Fall Apart

My absurd schedule continues to leave me perpetually scrambling to keep up with the website.  But even after putting up that sarcastic post on the FSK Bridge collapse I feel I must make some comments on it.  Whether the crash was the result of equipment failure, sabotage or somebody doing something unbelievably stupid, we can’t ignore the fact that our country seems to be slipping into disorder.  The systems and protocols that allow a complex society to function are no longer functioning correctly.  Jet planes are falling apart in mid-air.  The power grid is failing over large swaths of the country because of too much rain or too little rain or no reason at all.  Things are beginning to break down.

And it’s not as if people in positions of responsibility haven’t noticed these things.  For the last ten years safety has been one of the holy words in corporate America.  I was involved in a Fortune 100 company’s engineering planning and all they ever talked about was multiply redundant systems.  The planning was scheduled twenty years in advance to replace and enlarge all the important equipment and systems.  These weren’t people who ignored the big picture.  But what they seemed oblivious to was the human factor.

They had built up this highly complicated, highly precise way of producing very valuable materials but what they ignored was who they had running these systems.  They had felt no compunction about shedding the people who built up this machine and replacing them with diversity hires who really didn’t get the job done.  And slowly over the course of a dozen years they hollowed out the human capital they had working for them.  Then the pandemic threw a monkey wrench into the works and all hell broke loose.  Suddenly their competition was poaching what was left of their upper management and even the few diversity hires who were halfway competent left for big signing bonuses and salaries.

And as they scraped the bottom of the barrel serious problems began to erupt.  Key production personnel called in sick during critical operations and the people left were essentially useless and caused the loss of millions of dollars of product.  The C-suite was not amused.  Diversity is our strength but if local management starts losing money, heads must roll and it won’t be the CEO’s.

So a hatchetman will be despatched to punish the innocent, promote the guilty and declare victory.  But once the rot is too far advanced the parent company will probably prefer to shut down the operation and buy a new smaller company whose IP and human capital is sufficiently attractive and valuable to raise the quarterly dividend and allow them to forget those losers they fired out in the sticks.

So that’s how it works in corporate America.  But what about just plain America?  All those blue cities are beginning to discover that allowing the complete breakdown of law and order is really, really bad for business.  Today I went through a run down New England mill town.  It’s a depressing place where police cars are always clustered like angry wasps around some local affront to normal life.  There used to be an enormous Rite Aid store in the middle of a strip mall in that place.  All the other stores have long ago closed down.  Now they have removed the sign letters from the side of the Rite Aid building and the big windows looked in on nothing.  And that’s blue city America 2024.  Hollowed out and dead.

Adam Smith allegedly said “there’s a lot of ruin in a nation.”  That may be true but we’ve reached a tipping point in a lot of these places.  Companies are abandoning leases and even mortgages on buildings in places like San Francisco and New York.  Certainly, even the captains of industry may be wondering if it’s time to pull the plug on the progressives.  And that may be the only reason why Donald Trump might be allowed to regain the White House strictly on the grounds of self-preservation.

But is it too late?

“Turning and turning in the widening gyre

The falcon cannot hear the falconer;

Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;

Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,

The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere

The ceremony of innocence is drowned;

The best lack all conviction, while the worst

Are full of passionate intensity……”

After Thanksgiving Thoughts

Two days of food!  Oh, the pain, the pain.  But it was worth it.  Camera Girl was pleased with her feast and her guests.  She said it was the best Thanksgiving ever.  And I have to agree.  It was untroubled.  The food was excellent.  The guests were merry and amiable and the activities and conversation were enjoyable.  In all ways it was excellent.  And now we have the holiday season.  From now till Christmas time will fly.

So, while we’re enjoying (or cursing) the orgy of buying and preparation, we can reflect a little on the year that is just about over.  What did 2023 entail?

Maybe the most surprising thing about it was just how lousy it was for Joe Biden.  Regardless of whether the powers-that-be, by hook or by crook, can pull him over the finish line in November, it is pretty obvious that even his “voters” think he is garbage.  His approval rating is somewhere between thirty and forty percent.  And the first thirty percent would vote for Jack the Ripper if he has that “D” before his name.  That’s pretty amazing.

Of course, I think part of this has to do with the Democrat constituency.  The current situation with the Gaza War is a good example.  A good chunk of the Democrat voters is squarely on the side of Hamas and little things like Hamas followers disemboweling pregnant women or beheading infants aren’t going to change that.  So, if Joe Biden is seen to help the Israelis, he loses these folks.  These are what are known as one-issue-voters.  And although Jewish voters by and large vote Democrat, sharing a coalition with the Hamas-lovers surely must give many Jewish Democrats pause.  And that is good.  It’s important for people to confront the compromises that they make in their lives.  Watching videos of middle-easterners in Brooklyn screaming about burning Jews must be clarifying for Jewish New Yorkers who have defended the Moslems in America since 9-11-2001.  It might even lead them to question the validity of their political identity.

I think we all should be as realistic as possible about the choices we make.  I know that I’ve been thinking lately about where the line is drawn between acceptable and unacceptable positions by “my side.”  Hate for the sake of hate is a pretty ugly thing.  All of the talk about the incompatibility of different ethnic groups and identities gets overblown.  And most of the blame for that is on the Left for sure.  Once you start treating “protected groups” differently and encouraging criminal behavior, a reaction is bound to happen.

But the cure for discrimination isn’t reverse discrimination as has been amply demonstrated by the failures of affirmative action.  It’s scrupulous adherence to just laws and the basic decencies that a Christian society already provides for the less able.  I don’t see any clash between racial harmony and strict compliance with law and order.  In fact, I think it’s only by eliminating criminal behavior in the inner city that you provide the possibility of lessening poverty.  Before 2008 and Obama’s attempts to create race hatred, crime statistics in the urban areas were at a generational low.  The property values in places like Harlem were astronomical.  The only problem is that this could only exist with a Republican mayor and a law-and-order police commissioner.

But I digress.

As I was saying, Joe Biden is not a popular fellow and I think that gives us something to think about going into 2024.  Is the Democrat voting machine so “reinforced for democracy” that it can get even a stink bomb like Biden elected or will something else happen.  Will they replace him?  Can they replace him?  Will he lose?

Something to think about.

This One Sums it Up

This must be occurring to urban Democrats just about now.

When there are no police and your only weapon is your bare hands and they come for you it’s going to be a little too late to start talking about your constitutional rights. Hey maybe they’ll respect your rights because you voted for Biden. You can try telling them that. But I don’t think they speak English.

Target Took a Billion Dollar Hit Because of Shoplifting and Other Crime

In the post George Floyd environment retailers are suffering enormous shoplifting losses in blue run cities.  Not surprisingly, these companies are closing down their stores in the worst hit areas including San Francisco, Portland and Chicago.

Hopefully Target and the others aren’t going to complain that they aren’t getting what they asked for when they backed the Democrats and the BLM movement.  After all law and order is just a dog whistle for racism.  Those brave shoplifters and stickup men are helping to strike a blow for black reparations one felony at a time.

Chicago Police Officially Give Up

The natural evolution of the breakdown of law and order in Chicago has reached the next stage; police capitulation.

The hot weather must have stirred up the blood of the youth of Chicago so they went on a rampage.

“Hundreds of teens cause fiery chaos in Downtown Chicago as they torch cars in rampage organized on social media: Vastly outnumbered police manage just 15 arrests.”

It appeared as if police were unable to handle the crowd and were seen escorting innocent bystanders and tourists to safety.

Mayor Lightfoot said while many of the young people gathered to have a good time and enjoy the weather, some were involved in ‘reckless, disrespectful and unlawful behavior.’

So burning cars, assaulting passersby and shooting each other is reckless and disrespectful.  That’s a very revealing interpretation.  What would it take for her to call it a riot, mass decapitations?

Lightfoot noted that Chicago police leadership has assured her they will ‘make the necessary adjustments to address these teen trends issues as we move into the summer months.’

But the most telling statement comes from the mayor-elect, Brandon Johnson:

“It is not constructive to demonize youth who have otherwise been starved of opportunities in their own communities,” he said. “Our city must work together to create spaces for youth to gather safely and responsibly, under adult guidance and supervision, to ensure that every part of our city remains welcome for both residents and visitors.”

TRANSLATION:

Go ahead burn the city down I’ve got your back just keep voting for me and you can do whatever you like.

So this is before the new mayor takes office.  Can you imagine what will be going on by Juneteenth?  The devolution is moving along nicely.  Maybe Mayor Johnson doesn’t even get through the first year of his term before he throws in the towel and calls for Illinois to enact martial law.  Either way we’re getting a ringside seat to the next stage in Joe Biden’s America.  Well, it’s a hell of a ride.

Could a Permanent Solution Emerge Out of Chaos?

Of all the most discouraging aspects of the breakdown of civilization we have been living through the single worst was the orgy of violence and destruction that the Blue State and City governors and mayors unleashed on their cities.  Forcing the police to stand down and allow the mobs to terrorize and victimize the innocent people of these places was horrifying.  And the consequence of this decision has been the ascension of criminal urban gangs to dominance over the streets of these cities.  The consequences of this have been unsustainable for law-abiding people trying to raise families and make a living.  Businesses are subject to random and overwhelming attack by mobs of smash and grab thugs stealing everything of value and threatening violence or even shooting and killing the patrons and employees of businesses.  And every city dweller is subject to random violence at any time.

This state of affairs is similar to what went on during the Middle Ages when marauders and pirates would descend on a coastal town and rape and pillage and burn whatever they wanted to, leaving the inhabitants terrorized and devastated.  The threat was only finally ended when the local nobles figured out that building walled towns and recruiting a standing army was the only way to defeat the Viking incursions.

Now we already know that the only way to suppress crime is to have a strong and effective criminal justice system.  You need a professional police force and a carefully calibrated court and prison system.  It can be neither too draconian nor too lax.  Too strong and the citizens will feel enslaved, too weak and the criminals will rampage across the countryside.  But once you break that system you can’t just click a switch and reactivate it.  It will require an effort and a conscious decision by both the government and the people.  By necessity the people will have to empower a champion whose job it will be to reconquer the areas that have fallen to the barbarians.  And that will of necessity require that the actions be severe and possibly exaggerated.  Death penalties may have to reappear in order to make an example of the worst offenders.  But none of this will happen until the people despair of fixing things by half measures.  The police won’t take the risk of prosecution for using deadly force unless the people signal their desperation and their clear agreement to the use of drastic measures.

I do not imagine we are anywhere near this point yet.  Idiots like the mayor of San Francisco will talk about empowering the police to stop crime an restore order.  All that talk is just noise.  It means nothing.  Even Eric Adams who was elected in New York to be a law-and-order mayor has already signaled by his choice of a black woman diversity candidate for police commissioner that any talk of law and order will be lip service.  I’ve often facetiously talked about cannibalism breaking out in the blue cities.  Well, it may be a joke but I think things will have to get a lot worse before they get better.  Maybe once some billionaire has his child kidnapped for ransom the rich people will realize how close to third world banana republic we’ve sunk.  Or maybe a gang lord will shoot up a school yard and the sight of fifty dead kids will bring people to their senses.

But whatever the exact circumstance, I think it will be crime that finally snaps this country out of its stupor.  When that happens whoever has the courage to lead that crusade will find enormous leverage to make big changes to our government.  And hopefully he’ll be smart and wise enough to make them.

29NOV2021 – OCF Update – Special Book Review

Just received a copy of a book recently written by a very good friend of mine.  Justified Deadly Force and the Myth of Systemic Racism

He’s a veteran law enforcement officer and he’s put together a text book to go over the reality of the use of deadly force by police over the course of the last number of years.  I’ve just started it and will probably have several review posts about it.  The author wrote it primarily to be a text for Criminal Justice courses about the subject of deadly force.

Full disclosure, I do not receive any commission from the link.

Defund the Police Looks Like a Winner … for President Trump and the Republicans

Over at the Federalist a Chinese immigrant relates how her Trump hating democrat friends have had enough of the looting and will take Trump if it saves them from the mob.

The “Defund the Police” movement has not only turned more Americans into gun owners and supporters for the Second Amendment, but may prove to be a boon for President Trump’s reelection campaign. Since downtown Oakland saw some of the worst riots and looting in the nation, I recently checked in with a friend who lives there to make sure she and her family are safe.

Like me, she’s an immigrant from China and experienced Chairman Mao Zedong’s “Cultural Revolution” when growing up. Unlike me, she has supported Democrats for years. She loathes everything Trump stands for, from his immigration rhetoric to positions on foreign policy. For the sake of our friendship, we typically avoid discussing domestic politics as well.

This time, however, she went straight to domestic politics. She told me she and her family were safe but the riots and looting in downtown Oakland were terrifying. She was heartbroken to see so many immigrant-owned “mom and pop” stores ransacked or even burned to the ground.

She conveyed that while she wanted to see justice for Floyd, night after night of destruction and lawlessness were just “too much.” They reminded her of China’s “Cultural Revolution” from 1966-1976. She told me: “I didn’t come all this way to America to re-live a ‘Cultural Revolution’ in 2020.” Then she said something I would never have thought she’d say before: “Trump is right. We need law and order.”

What can you say?  Stupid Democrats, sure, but even they can see reality when it burns their neighborhood out.
