{"id":1037,"date":"2017-04-29T23:12:18","date_gmt":"2017-04-30T03:12:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/?p=1037"},"modified":"2017-06-13T18:17:11","modified_gmt":"2017-06-13T22:17:11","slug":"changelings-island-by-dave-freer-a-very-short-review-by-proxy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/index.php\/2017\/04\/29\/changelings-island-by-dave-freer-a-very-short-review-by-proxy\/","title":{"rendered":"Changeling&#8217;s Island by Dave Freer \u2013 A Very Short Review (by Proxy)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I have a relative, a boy in seventh grade, who is a ravenous reader of science fiction and fantasy (among other things).\u00a0 Being a conservative and being allergic to anything smacking of political correct narrative fiction I have made it my practice to pass along the older stuff that I grew up on back in the time before fun was banned.\u00a0 He digests these old books at a rate that seems almost supernatural.\u00a0 But recently I bought something modern to see how that would fly.<\/p>\n<p>I had heard good things about Dave Freer\u2019s \u201cChangeling\u2019s Island.\u201d\u00a0 I ordered it on Amazon but instead of the usual two days, it took about two weeks.\u00a0 I guess it had to be printed on order.\u00a0 I did a quick read of the first couple of chapters and found it engaging and appropriate for my young reading machine.\u00a0 I dropped it off a week ago and hoped he would like it.<\/p>\n<p>Well, I spoke with him today and discovered that not only did he like it, he wanted more of the same.\u00a0 Apparently, this was good stuff.\u00a0 I told him I didn\u2019t have any more at the moment but would check for more stuff from Freer.\u00a0 He was unpleased at my unpreparedness to feed the machine with its new fuel of choice.\u00a0 In desperation, I foisted off a set of the Foundation trilogy on him that I had been holding onto since 1970, and told him I\u2019d try to do better in the future.\u00a0 So now I have to find out if Freer has any other young adult sf&amp;f available.\u00a0 If not I\u2019ll be responsible for disappointing the next generation.\u00a0 Wish me luck.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; I have a relative, a boy in seventh grade, who is a ravenous reader of science fiction and fantasy (among other things).\u00a0 Being a<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_mi_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[241,237,4,242],"tags":[68,11,44,59],"class_list":["post-1037","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-book-reviews","category-reviews","category-sff","category-sff-book-reviews","tag-book-review","tag-sad-puppies","tag-sci-fi","tag-urban-fantasy"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.4 -
