There\u2019s not much left on TV for me to watch anymore.\u00a0 I remembered hearing over the last few years from several reviewers who were not progressives that \u201cJustified\u201d was pretty good.\u00a0 Well, last week my Netflix queue was completely empty so I added season one of Justified to my queue. With some trepidation, photog and camera-girl settled in this week and watched the first two disks.\u00a0 And eight or nine episodes into the season we still haven\u2019t seen a bad show.\u00a0 It\u2019s actually very good.\u00a0 Timothy Olyphant is the protagonist playing a US Marshall named Raylan Givens.\u00a0 He\u2019s been sent back to his home state of Kentucky after shooting a drug lord in Miami under questionable circumstances.\u00a0 This puts him in contact with his family, friends, associates and enemies.\u00a0 And the amount of overlap between all of these categories in the episodes I\u2019ve seen is quite remarkable.\u00a0 And here we run into the expected stereotyping of the Appalachians.\u00a0 For instance, Ray\u2019s father is married to Aunt Helen.\u00a0 I\u2019m not far enough into the story yet but it appears she was Aunt Helen before she was married to Ray\u2019s father Arlo.\u00a0 So, the incest and inbreeding jokes can\u2019t be far off.\u00a0 Also, one of Ray\u2019s old friends from his time as a coal miner is now a bank robber who dabbles in white supremacy and shoulder launched rockets.<\/p>\n
Needless to say, Ray\u2019s personal and professional lives become extremely entangled and pretty early on he finds himself sleeping with a woman he shouldn\u2019t be.\u00a0 He had been investigating her for shooting and killing her husband.\u00a0 Subsequently she is his witness in his shooting of her brother in law.\u00a0 Add into the mix that the brother in law is also that coal miner \/ bank robber friend of Ray\u2019s and it starts getting extremely complicated and confusing.\u00a0 Also, Ray\u2019s father is a criminal.\u00a0 Ray\u2019s ex-wife is married to a man in hock to mobsters and Ray\u2019s boss is starting to think he\u2019s unstable.\u00a0 Oh, and the investigation into that drug lord he shot is getting complicated by all the other guys Ray\u2019s been shooting since he got to Kentucky.\u00a0 And finally, the drug lord\u2019s friends really, really want Ray dead.\u00a0 It\u2019s a really fun show.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m only about half way through season one and so it\u2019s hard to say where this will all be by season six but so far this is a crime drama that\u2019s well written, filled with action and includes characters that while far from unconflicted are quite sympathetic for the audience.\u00a0 Timothy Olyphant is the obvious star but the supporting cast is quite strong and fun to watch and listen to.\u00a0 I especially enjoy Nick Searcy as Ray\u2019s boss, Art Mullen.\u00a0 He brings a dry wit and long suffering attitude to the job of overseeing Ray\u2019s overcomplicated work-life balance.<\/p>\n
So, that\u2019s my first installment.\u00a0 I will be watching a bunch more of these in the next few weeks and will give an update on my recommendation.\u00a0 But so far, I\u2019d have to say watching Justified is definitely justified.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
