Justified – A TV Series Review – Part 1<\/a><\/p>\n

I just finished watching the last two episodes of Season 1.\u00a0 This is some kind of crazy show.<\/p>\n

I guess I better preface my opinions by saying I haven\u2019t been a member of the audience during the much touted \u201cgolden age of cable television\u201d that\u2019s been going on for the last decade or so.\u00a0 I never cared about \u201cThe Sopranos\u201d and I didn\u2019t care about \u201cMadmen\u201d although I watched a few episodes a while back.\u00a0 Likewise, I started watching the \u201cBreaking Bad\u201d episode where he is burning his money on the barbecue and then throws it into the swimming pool.\u00a0 All I saw was Hal from \u201cMalcom in the Middle\u201d in his underwear making funny noises that weren\u2019t particularly funny.<\/p>\n

So maybe I\u2019m not up on what\u2019s current in TV Land.\u00a0 Take that as given.<\/p>\n

This is some kind of crazy show.\u00a0 Apparently, Kentucky is located in the Twilight Zone where endless criminal activity and gun play is completely routine.\u00a0 Timothy Olyphant\u2019s character (Raylan Givens) is literally submerged in family, friends and strangers who all seem to be at each other\u2019s throats twenty-four, seven.\u00a0 Over the course of those two episodes at least sixteen people were shot dead.\u00a0 And this is ignoring beatdowns, kidnappings, arson, non-lethal shootings, and even shoulder mounted rocket attacks.\u00a0 And the cast of characters are almost exclusively highly conflicted and dangerous individuals.\u00a0 Perhaps the only exception (and it\u2019s a little early for me to be sure of this) is Ray\u2019s boss, Art Mullen, the Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal (played by Nick Searcy).\u00a0 He is, of course, surrounded by the insane happenings but so far seems to be operating as a sane law enforcement agent trying to manage his team and stay within the law.\u00a0 But I\u2019m sure in the course of the show\u2019s six-year run he must crack.<\/p>\n

Season One documents Ray\u2019s return to Kentucky.\u00a0 And the circumstances highlight Ray\u2019s already unorthodox perspective on law enforcement.\u00a0 He has a code of behavior that allows him to supersede normal legal protocol when he determines that someone isn\u2019t just a normal criminal.\u00a0 In other words, if someone has figured out how to game the system to commit acts that Ray cannot allow to occur he is determined to use extra-legal activities to curtail them.\u00a0 He takes the law into his own hands.\u00a0 That\u2019s the premise of the show.\u00a0 In his mind, he\u2019s justified.\u00a0 I guess we\u2019ll find out if the world confirms this or changes his mind.<\/p>\n

So as of the end of season 1 I am enthusiastically a fan of the show.\u00a0 As I said the character are conflicted and most of them are not good people by any definition of the word.\u00a0 But several of them have been shown to be interesting.\u00a0 Of special importance seems to be Boyd Crowder, played by Walton Goggins.\u00a0 Boyd\u2019s criminal family is the focus of much of season one\u2019s action.\u00a0 Boyd is both a career criminal and Ray\u2019s boyhood friend.\u00a0 They worked together in the Kentucky coal mines.\u00a0 And it seems apparent they are meant to be two sides of a coin throw.<\/p>\n

The show maintains a very active pace with rarely a dull moment.\u00a0 Ray\u2019s romantic life is, so far, the least interesting part of the show but perhaps with additional insight into the motivations and back story of the main women in his life we\u2019ll get a better understanding of why we should care which of them is his leading lady.\u00a0 Of course, that is assuming any of them lives long enough to develop a domestic back story.<\/p>\n

And as a point of information on the female reaction to Justified, Camera Girl (or more formally, Mrs. Photog) is also enthusiastically a fan of the show.\u00a0 But she is more blood thirsty than I and less philosophical.\u00a0 So that makes it less surprising to me.\u00a0 Stay tuned and I will update this as I view the succeeding seasons in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n
