Ellie Andrews (E) \u2013 And suppose nobody stops for us?<\/p>\n
P \u2013 They’ll stop all right. It’s a matter of knowing how to handle them.<\/p>\n
E \u2013 And you’re an expert I suppose.<\/p>\n
P \u2013 Expert. And I’ll write a book about it. Call it “The Hitchhiker’s Hail.”<\/p>\n
E \u2013 There’s no end to your accomplishments, is there?<\/p>\n
P \u2013 You think it’s simple?<\/p>\n
E \u2013 No.<\/p>\n
P \u2013 Well, it is simple.\u00a0 It’s all in that old thumb, see?\u00a0 Some people do it like this. Or like this.\u00a0 All wrong. Never get anywhere.<\/p>\n
E \u2013 The poor things.<\/p>\n
P \u2013 But that old thumb never fails.\u00a0 It’s all a matter of how you do it, though.\u00a0 Now you take No. 1 for instance.\u00a0 That’s a short jerky movement, like this.\u00a0 That shows independence.\u00a0 You don’t care if they stop or not.\u00a0 You got money.<\/p>\n
E \u2013 Clever.<\/p>\n
P \u2013 No. 2, that’s a little wider movement.\u00a0 Smile goes with this one, like this.\u00a0 That means you got a brand-new story about the farmer’s daughter.<\/p>\n
E \u2013 You figured that out all by yourself?<\/p>\n
P \u2013 That’s nothing. No. 3, that’s a pip.\u00a0 That’s the pitiful one.\u00a0 When you’re broke and hungry, everything looks black.\u00a0 It’s a long sweeping movement like this.\u00a0 Gotta follow through, though.<\/p>\n
E \u2013 That’s amazing.<\/p>\n
P \u2013 But it’s no good, if you haven’t got a long face to go with it.<\/p>\n
E \u2013 Here comes a car.<\/p>\n
P \u2013 Okay. Now watch me.\u00a0 I’m gonna use No. 1.\u00a0 Keep your eye on that thumb, baby, and see what happens.<\/p>\n
(The car speeds by without slowing down)<\/p>\n
E \u2013 I\u2019ve still got my eye on the thumb.<\/p>\n
P \u2013 Something must have gone wrong.\u00a0 I’ll try No. 2.<\/p>\n
E \u2013 When you get to a hundred wake me up.<\/p>\n
(Peter tries all his routines repeatedly, on a procession of cars, one after the other, and finally gives up)<\/p>\n
P \u2013 I don’t think I’ll write that book after all.<\/p>\n
E \u2013 No but think of all the fun you had, though.\u00a0 You mind if I try?<\/p>\n
P \u2013 You?\u00a0 Don’t make me laugh.<\/p>\n
E \u2013 You’re such a smart aleck.\u00a0 Nobody knows anything but you.\u00a0 I’ll stop a car and I won’t use my thumb.<\/p>\n
P \u2013 What are you gonna do?<\/p>\n
E \u2013 It’s a system all my own.<\/p>\n
(Ellie walks over to the edge of the road and as a car approaches pulls her skirt up over her leg well above her knee.\u00a0 Scene cuts to the interior of the car where the driver slams on the brake and pulls the emergency brake.\u00a0 Scene cuts to Ellie and Peter sitting in the rear seat of the car they\u2019ve stopped.\u00a0 Ellie is looking pleased and Peter is looking disgruntled.)<\/p>\n
E \u2013 Aren’t you going to give me a little credit?<\/p>\n
P \u2013 What for?<\/p>\n
E \u2013 I proved once and for all that the limb is mightier than the thumb.<\/p>\n
P \u2013 Why didn’t you take off all your clothes?\u00a0 Then you could have stopped a hundred cars.<\/p>\n
E \u2013 I’ll remember that when we need a hundred cars.<\/p>\n
