The line goes there are only two seasons in New England.\u00a0 Winter and July.\u00a0 Usually I have this big family gathering in July.\u00a0 It\u2019s a ton of planning and communication and it sort of monopolizes a good chunk of the month with the before, during and after.\u00a0\u00a0 But conflicting commitments have forced me to schedule the event in late August.\u00a0 In a way, this is kind of a good thing.\u00a0 This means I can enjoy July on its own merits.\u00a0 So, the New England statement about July acknowledges the fact that July is pure summer.\u00a0 June can start out feeling like spring.\u00a0\u00a0 August can end up feeling like fall.\u00a0 July has no excuses.\u00a0 It has to deliver.\u00a0 Too many children (and adults) are depending on it.\u00a0 On Bastille Day, I want to look up at a pale blue sky with a blazing sun forcing me to close my eyes and feel the heat of the daystar on my face.\u00a0 I want to lay in a hammock under a shady tree and hear the deafening whir of the cicadas in the trees overhead.\u00a0 I want a hot breeze to blow over me and feel the oven-like heat surround me and make me think that jumping in a swimming pool is actually a good idea.\u00a0 I want a glass of lemonade to seem tempting.\u00a0 I want to be so lazy that reading an old book like Dandelion Wine sounds strenuous.\u00a0 I want to put off anything difficult like watching old movies or eating ice cream until night.\u00a0 I want to watch a baseball game as if I actually care who wins.\u00a0 I want to take my grandsons fishing.\u00a0 I want to take the perfect photo of the Milky Way or a dragonfly\u2019s eye.\u00a0 I want to write a classic short story.\u00a0 And I want to spend one whole day just trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up.<\/p>\n
As you can tell I\u2019m pretty passionate about July.\u00a0 Truth be told July belongs to me.\u00a0 I patented it many years ago.\u00a0 I own it lock stock and barrel.\u00a0 So, I feel it\u2019s my duty to reap the maximum benefit from it every year.\u00a0 And once it\u2019s over I relinquish my hold on summer.\u00a0 After that it\u2019s fitting to put aside childish things.\u00a0 It\u2019ll be time to start considering the realities of the calendar.\u00a0 And sure, there are all kinds of things to look forward to in Autumn.\u00a0 There\u2019s Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas ahead with all that those entail. \u00a0 But never again for the rest of the year ahead is there that feeling of pure freedom. \u00a0Maybe it\u2019s my Mediterranean blood.\u00a0 Possibly northern peoples don\u2019t crave the intemperate heat of July.\u00a0 Or maybe if I lived in a southern state I would have my fill of heat and shun July\u2019s burning sun.\u00a0 Maybe.\u00a0 But neither of these is the case.\u00a0 I truly believe that if July disappoints and does not present me with the extreme weather I crave then my whole year is spoiled and I will go into the colder seasons weakened and at a disadvantage.<\/p>\n
So, you see July is my time.\u00a0 Maybe I\u2019m not the only one who feels this way.\u00a0 But trust me, July belongs to me.\u00a0 The rest of you just get to borrow it.\u00a0 But I don\u2019t mind sharing.\u00a0 You\u2019re welcome.\u00a0 Enjoy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
