{"id":1320,"date":"2017-07-26T22:31:34","date_gmt":"2017-07-27T02:31:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/?p=1320"},"modified":"2017-07-27T12:28:26","modified_gmt":"2017-07-27T16:28:26","slug":"wyatt-earp-and-tombstone-a-comparison-movie-review-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/index.php\/2017\/07\/26\/wyatt-earp-and-tombstone-a-comparison-movie-review-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Wyatt Earp and Tombstone, A Comparison \u2013 Movie Review \u2013 Part 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/index.php\/2017\/07\/24\/wyatt-earp-and-tombstone-a-comparison-movie-review-part-1\/\">Wyatt Earp and Tombstone, A Comparison \u2013 Movie Review \u2013 Part 1<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kevin Costner was originally going to be Wyatt Earp in Tombstone.\u00a0 But he and the director\/screenwriter disagreed on how much of the movie was supposed to center on Wyatt Earp and his background.\u00a0 He left the production and decided to make the movie \u201cWyatt Earp\u201d instead.<\/p>\n<p>Wyatt Earp is a sort of biography of Earp.\u00a0 It starts with Wyatt as a teenager trying to run away to fight in the Civil War, shows him falling in love, marrying and losing his young wife to typhus.\u00a0 Giving in to a drunken despair he commits some capital crimes and has to flee his old life never to return.\u00a0 He went out to the frontier and worked first as a buffalo skinner and then as a lawman.\u00a0 These chapters effectively chronicled the background and events that formed the man that we recognize in the various versions of the legend.\u00a0 And it shows his links to other characters of legend like Holliday and Bat Masterson and his brother Ed. \u00a0And we get the particulars of all of the Earp brothers and their wives.\u00a0 And what does Wyatt Earp end up as? \u00a0He\u2019s a man hardened to the realities of life in the West.\u00a0 And someone who trusts his family and very few others.\u00a0 This sets up the events that transpire in Tombstone and afterward.<\/p>\n<p>Costner plays the part with his typical understated style.\u00a0 The supporting cast is interesting and probably the best of them is Dennis Quaid as Doc Holliday.\u00a0 The production is done in high style with excellent cinematography and a full musical score.\u00a0 The direction and scene selection seemed well thought out and deliberate and didn\u2019t produce any confusion over plot elements which was important considering the length of years and progression of different characters covered in the film.\u00a0 It is a very long film coming in at three hours.\u00a0 And the deliberate pace and varying importance of the scenes probably was too much for some viewers who really came to see the Gunfight at the OK Corral.\u00a0 In fact the film was neither a financial or critical success.<\/p>\n<p>So, what do I think of it?\u00a0 I like it.\u00a0 I think it comes closer to the actual facts of the story than Tombstone.\u00a0 And I think despite his unflamboyant acting manner Costner does a much better job of portraying Wyatt Earp as he actually was.\u00a0 Where I would fault the effort is being so unreservedly faithful to the facts.\u00a0 Neither The Gunfight at the OK Corral or the subsequent vendetta appear as grandiose and mythic as they do in Tombstone and other descriptions.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a shame when a critic complains about an historical account being too accurate.\u00a0 It almost seems like nostalgia for mendacity.\u00a0 But that\u2019s an occupational hazard when dealing with the Old West.\u00a0 In fact, there\u2019s Holy Writ that covers it.
