{"id":14291,"date":"2021-04-24T13:32:03","date_gmt":"2021-04-24T17:32:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/?p=14291"},"modified":"2021-07-11T16:11:19","modified_gmt":"2021-07-11T20:11:19","slug":"preying-mantises-childrens-books-and-pa-part-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/index.php\/2021\/04\/24\/preying-mantises-childrens-books-and-pa-part-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Praying Mantises, Children\u2019s Books and Pa \u2013 Part 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My two-year-old granddaughter is a big fan of the books by the children\u2019s author Eric Carle.\u00a0 And one of her favorites is the Very Quiet Cricket.\u00a0 There is a YouTube video of an animated version of the book and one of the characters is a preying mantis that whispers in a hoarse voice a funny sounding \u201cHELLOOOOO!\u201d\u00a0 And that character is my granddaughter\u2019s favorite part of the book.\u00a0 So, she is a fan of preying mantises.\u00a0 And by a strange coincidence so am I.\u00a0 I\u2019ve always liked finding mantises wherever I have lived.\u00a0 And I have found them here in New England too but infrequently.<\/p>\n<p>And so, for that reason I\u2019ve decided to increase my odds of finding them this summer for my granddaughter.\u00a0 She said, \u201cPa, show me preying mantis.\u201d\u00a0 She calls me Pa because that is what all my grandchildren call me.\u00a0 My oldest grandson made the name up when he was barely able to speak and it became official.<\/p>\n<p>So I have to find her a mantis.\u00a0 I looked to see if any of the gardening supply stores in the area sell preying mantis egg cases.\u00a0 They didn\u2019t so I just ordered some on-line and should have them soon.\u00a0 Camera Girl thinks it will be educational to see the baby mantises hatch out and thinks we should keep a few to raise up.\u00a0 The prospect of finding aphids and then larger insects to feed them sounds challenging but I\u2019ll give it a try.<\/p>\n<p>With any luck by summer we\u2019ll have a few good sized mantises and my granddaughter will learn a little bit about an interesting insect.\u00a0 At least that\u2019s the plan.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1452\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1452\" style=\"width: 1696px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC04835.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1452\" src=\"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC04835.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1696\" height=\"2541\" srcset=\"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC04835.jpg 1696w, https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC04835-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC04835-768x1151.jpg 768w, https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DSC04835-683x1024.jpg 683w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1696px) 100vw, 1696px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1452\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Me and My Shadow<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My two-year-old granddaughter is a big fan of the books by the children\u2019s author Eric Carle.\u00a0 And one of her favorites is the Very Quiet<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_mi_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[5,1263,2860],"tags":[83,2206,352,351,2093],"class_list":["post-14291","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-current-events","category-stuff-that-personally-interests-me-miscellaneous","category-reclaiming-the-family","tag-family","tag-grandparents","tag-praying-mantis","tag-preying-mantis","tag-reclaiming-the-family"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.4 -
