Well the Memorial Day Family Barbecue Day dawns wet, freezing cold and gray.<\/p>\n

Perfect for New England!\u00a0 The land of cold and mildew.<\/p>\n

But all is well.\u00a0 I got up and cleaned the grill on the lowest deck and moved it so that the smoke will get blown out to the sky but will leave me under the overhang, snug and dry.\u00a0 I walked the property in the rain and saw all the flowers and weeds swelling in the rain.\u00a0 One of the ponds had cold bull frogs and leopard frogs that were too chilled to care that I was walking by.\u00a0 I dropped the level on the swimming pool and backwashed it to get rid of all the pollen and tree debris that the wind and rain brought down.\u00a0 We won\u2019t be using it today.\u00a0 That\u2019s for sure.<\/p>\n

The hellebore flowers are fading out now and the rhododendrons are at peak bloom and one of the earlier blooming bushes is already shedding its flowers.\u00a0 Have to get a few photos soon.\u00a0 The cone flowers and the roses are starting to bud and the irises are just about done.\u00a0 Boy they don\u2019t last long.\u00a0 And miracle of miracles the deer haven\u2019t eaten the daylilies or the hostas like they usually do.\u00a0 They did pick off one bunch of Solomon\u2019s Seal bunches but I\u2019ve got plenty to spare.\u00a0 As Camera Girl says everybody\u2019s got to eat.\u00a0 Well, I wish someone would eat the deer but that another story.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s too cold for us to eat outside so I\u2019ve made a big table in the dining room from four folding tables and we\u2019ll all sit together and feast on Camera Girl\u2019s fixings and my barbecue skills.\u00a0 Today is restricted to burgers, dogs, and sausage on the meat side.\u00a0 We\u2019ll complement that with homemade potato salad, baked beans, corn on the cob, washed down with lemonade and followed up with watermelon, Italian cheese cake, apple pie, strawberry shortcake, vanilla ice cream and by popular demand Klondike Bars.\u00a0 All of that dessert will be washed down with good coffee and lots of good talk and laughter as the grandchildren get spoiled their grandmother and I tell lies about the good old days.<\/p>\n

Afterwards we\u2019ll talk about school and what they want to do this summer and their vacation plans.\u00a0 I\u2019ll make a point of leaving out politics and COVID since that will just upset everyone on a happy day.\u00a0 We\u2019ll talk about inflation and education costs and whatever else is on their minds.\u00a0 Maybe we\u2019ll watch some old kids\u2019 movies.\u00a0 Maybe not.\u00a0 Maybe I\u2019ll just put on some music.\u00a0 Should be a lot of fun.<\/p>\n

What else can I ask for.\u00a0 Healthy kids, productive adults and functional families.\u00a0 That\u2019s as good as it gets.\u00a0 So at least for this year I\u2019m still king of my castle and the secret police aren\u2019t supposed to make an appearance at the castle gate.\u00a0 I can make believe that Memorial Day still means we live in the United States of America.\u00a0 Enjoy your holiday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
