It\u2019s a hot one, a scorcher.\u00a0 I was out there trying to get some shots of hummingbirds and I think they were watching me from the shade of the trees saying to each other, \u201cIs he crazy?\u00a0 We\u2019re not going out in that sun for a little sugar water!\u201d<\/p>\n

But this is real summer.\u00a0 You can see all the moisture the ground has soaked up over the last month or so rippling into the air as currents of chromatic diffractions of the solar photons pummeling the ground.\u00a0 I put on my floppy hat and brave the noonday sun in quest of photographic knowledge.\u00a0 And there\u2019s scant little of that.\u00a0 Even the usually reliable bees and butterflies and even the dragonflies have taken refuge out of the sun, the cowards.<\/p>\n

Camera Girl and Princess Sack-of-Potatoes took to the pool after lunch and of course as soon as I went in for lunch, supposedly, the hummingbirds were everywhere, on the flowers, at the feeders, even hovering between the girls at the side of the pool.\u00a0 I shouted out, \u201cFake News!\u201d\u00a0 But her haughty sneer let me know I wasn\u2019t fooling Camera Girl.\u00a0 I knew she spoke the truth.<\/p>\n

I will go back out after four.\u00a0 At that point the sun\u2019s blast will be merely Saharan and therefore survivable.\u00a0 I will say that this tracking autofocus function still requires a fair amount of skill, of technique that I am sadly lacking.\u00a0 But persevere I will.\u00a0 I must know the answers.\u00a0 Are my old lenses useful or ballast?\u00a0 I will find out.<\/p>\n

After conferring with my grandsons I recognized their seasonal anxiety.\u00a0 They sense the end of summer vacation.\u00a0 They reminded me not to waste the days that we have left.\u00a0 Labor Day is right up the road and after that there\u2019s nothing on the horizon until Halloween.\u00a0 So I must get out there and see what I can see.<\/p>\n

I think tomorrow I\u2019ll head for the local lake.\u00a0 I want to see if any water birds are around.\u00a0 That would be a nice tame autofocus-tracking target.\u00a0 I\u2019m tired of trying to capture Larold running at full tilt.\u00a0 The camera doesn\u2019t stand a chance.\u00a0 Last year there was a bald eagle at that lake.\u00a0 I don\u2019t suppose I\u2019ll luck out and it\u2019ll be there but you never know.\u00a0 In an unrelated photographic idea there is an old colonial graveyard nearby and I thought I\u2019d go over there and do some closeup photography of the old stones.\u00a0 Nothing that will show the whole stones but more the texture of the erosion on the carving.<\/p>\n

Haven\u2019t seen much wildlife this summer.\u00a0 There was a bear on the property recently but he didn\u2019t do any damage surprisingly enough.\u00a0 Last year he flattened one of our bird feeder polls.\u00a0 And speaking of birds Camera girl has been reading about some mysterious bird ailment that is killing the birds.\u00a0 So of course the first thing they tell her is \u201cStop feeding the birds!\u201d\u00a0 Blah, blah, blah.\u00a0 I told her do as she pleases.\u00a0 If feeding the birds is going to cause the apocalypse then let her rip.\u00a0 I figure it\u2019s bird COVID.\u00a0 So why shouldn\u2019t they get a taste of it too?<\/p>\n

Well, the silly season is ending in three weeks or so.\u00a0 Then we\u2019ll have the atrocities in Washington to bemoan, only I\u2019m all out of outrage for the inevitable.\u00a0 I figure codified election fraud is in our immediate future so bring it on.\u00a0 But it will wake up a mess of normies.\u00a0 Maybe that will do some good.\u00a0 So enjoy the rest of the summer and I\u2019ll be here when you get back.<\/p>\n
