This is such an awful movie that I thought I should start off with a clear statement to that effect.\u00a0 The script is unbelievably bad.\u00a0 And with a script this bad it wouldn\u2019t really help if the cast were first rate because even Lawrence Olivier would sound like an idiot saying idiotic things.\u00a0 But this is not a first-rate cast.<\/p>\n
Richard Dix \u201cstars\u201d as Richard McAllan a brilliant engineer who has already built a tunnel under the English Channel.\u00a0 Not satisfied with that he\u2019s now going to build a tunnel under the Atlantic Ocean from England to the United States.\u00a0 Well, good for him.\u00a0 But his wife is unhappy because the daughter of one of the financial backers has the hots for her husband and has blonde hair that\u2019s blonder than hers.\u00a0 And blondie keeps dragging her husband away to publicity shoots in New York.\u00a0 So somehow this convinces her to go work in the tunnel as a nurse without her husband knowing.\u00a0 And she ends up with \u201ctunnel fever\u201d and goes blind.\u00a0 So, for reasons that don\u2019t make any sense to the audience she leaves her husband and raises their son up alone until he\u2019s old enough to get killed \u201cworking in the tunnel.\u201d\u00a0 Apparently, the tunnel designers picked a route that had an active volcano directly in the path of the drill.\u00a0 And in order to contain the destruction caused by the raging volcano McAllan is forced to shut the isolation doors trapping McAllan Jr. and sending him to a fiery death.\u00a0 When McAllan explains this death to his blind wife it sounds like he\u2019s trying to find the bright side of this unfortunate situation.\u00a0 It\u2019s really quite extraordinary.\u00a0 It\u2019s as if the dialog were written by someone who had never met humans and had been raised by google-bots.<\/p>\n
Finally, when the tunnel is somehow completed the President of the United States and the British Prime Minister announce it to their respective nations as if it were the second coming of the Lord.\u00a0 Somehow the tunnel would bring on world peace and defense budgets would be slashed to nothing and prosperity would engulf humanity.\u00a0 I\u2019m really not sure why shipping things from Europe to America somewhat faster would achieve all that.\u00a0 But there was a lot of cheering.\u00a0 Go Anglosphere!\u00a0 Next, I guess a tunnel between Australia and California would really make the world a greater place.\u00a0 I think I\u2019m really feeling that tunnel fever now.<\/p>\n
And there are problems beyond just a bad plot and dialog.\u00a0 The tunnel sets and the props like the pressure suits they wear are quite silly looking.\u00a0 And the investors and the public gyrate between giddy elation and stark terror on an almost constant basis.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There\u2019s even a murder plot going on between two of the venture capitalists funding the project.\u00a0 It all seems to have been strung together from odds and ends out of a bucket of spare ideas for movie plot devices.\u00a0 I would say, unless you really enjoy bad old sci-fi movies skip this turkey.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
