The first day of fall in 2021 is on Wednesday, September 22 at 3.21pm EDT.\u00a0 Fall is the dying season.\u00a0 You see it in the leaves changing color and falling to the ground.\u00a0 You hear it in the desperate chirping of the crickets as they cling to warmth under stones and leaf mold.\u00a0 You can smell it in the air as the dying leaves begin to decay.\u00a0 And you can feel it in your head as the air begins to cool and dry out.\u00a0 And for the old folks you can feel it in your old bones as cold begins to tighten your muscles and tendons.<\/p>\n

There will be many beautiful days in September, October and November.\u00a0 But summer is over and it will impact the way I feel and what I do.\u00a0 Many people love fall best.\u00a0 I can understand that.\u00a0 Many detest the heat of summer.\u00a0 Especially those living in the deep south.\u00a0 For them the end of summer is a release from brutal heat and humidity.\u00a0 But even in southern New England fall is just a prelude from the equally brutal reality of snow and cold.<\/p>\n

But the good thing about Autumn is the longer nights.\u00a0 For someone who spends a lot of time writing, the darkness is the right time to write.\u00a0 The quiet and darkness of night isn\u2019t interrupted by distracting sights and sounds.\u00a0 In summer I am often tempted to drop what I\u2019m working on and go out into the world and luxuriate in the heat and light and color and smell of the flowers.\u00a0 So that\u2019s the bad thing about Autumn.\u00a0 For a photographer there is the fall foliage and that\u2019s about it.\u00a0 The butterflies and the dragonflies and the hummingbirds are gone.\u00a0 In fact, most of the birds disappear.\u00a0 Hopefully I might see some turkeys but mostly all I\u2019ll hear is the wind and the water.<\/p>\n

To compensate we get together with friends and family to celebrate another year and compare notes on children, grandchildren and milestones.\u00a0 Hopefully we are mostly over the lockdown nonsense.\u00a0 I would hate to think we have to spend another holiday season in isolation.\u00a0 That would be a crime.<\/p>\n

So, the change of season finds me subdued but not depressed.\u00a0 There are some hopeful signs out in the political world.\u00a0 Even the fake news admits that Biden\u2019s job approval rating is underwater and bound to go lower.\u00a0 A few men have shown some backbone, DeSantis and Abbott.\u00a0 The mood on the real Right is quietly defiant.\u00a0 We know we\u2019re in a bad place but at least we aren\u2019t being led by traitors and idiots.\u00a0 We see what is going on around us with dismay but we are waiting to see if anyone will step forward and do something meaningful.\u00a0 I\u2019d say we\u2019re being realistic.<\/p>\n

Okay, enough gloom and doom.\u00a0 On the bright side Camera Girl will be cooking and baking splendiferous foods.\u00a0 Cakes and pies, soups and stews, roasts and sausages.\u00a0 Everything that makes eating fun.\u00a0 And of course, classic horror movies to celebrate Halloween.\u00a0 So, bring it on, bring it on, bring it on.\u00a0 Autumn here we come.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
