{"id":1639,"date":"2017-10-15T11:42:30","date_gmt":"2017-10-15T15:42:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/?p=1639"},"modified":"2017-10-15T11:42:30","modified_gmt":"2017-10-15T15:42:30","slug":"when-the-sleepers-awaken","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/index.php\/2017\/10\/15\/when-the-sleepers-awaken\/","title":{"rendered":"When the Sleepers Awaken"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A couple of months ago I wrote a post called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/index.php\/2017\/08\/21\/talking-to-the-sleepwalkers\/\">Talking to the Sleepwalkers<\/a>\u201d in which I described how I attempted to explain what Trump was all about to friends who were still looking at things from the point of view that the Republicans were actually conservative.\u00a0 At the end of the post I wrote, \u201cDid I wake anyone up?\u00a0 I don\u2019t know, but at least now I feel like I want to keep trying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Well yesterday an echo pinged back on the sonar.\u00a0 I was pointed to an article in the WSJ by one of the folks I was talking about before.\u00a0 It was entitled:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is \u2018Classical Liberalism\u2019 Conservative?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Trump didn\u2019t divide the right. Centuries-old philosophical divisions have re-emerged.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>By Yoram Hazony<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a description of how the \u201cNew World Order\u201d crowd convinced us (and themselves?) that they were conservative.\u00a0 I guess I got through.\u00a0 Good.\u00a0 That\u2019s a first step.\u00a0 And an important one.\u00a0 Until you know what the problem is, you can\u2019t possibly start working to effectively to fix it.<\/p>\n<p>A couple of years into this brave new world of right wing revolt we still don\u2019t even know what we are actually doing.\u00a0 The grass roots agitators aren\u2019t even aligned.\u00a0 In fact, they don\u2019t even know what to call themselves yet.\u00a0 Alt-Right, Dissident Right, Alt-West, Nationalists, Populists, etc.\u00a0 And of course, factionalism and cults of personality and disagreements on just about every subject imaginable are on display and defeatists and concern trolls are packed cheek to jowl as far as the eye can see.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s still infinitely better than not knowing why every action by \u201cour side\u201d was a defeat and every day brought a new outrage that went unchecked.\u00a0 And Trump is still in his White House so \u201call\u2019s right with the world.\u201d\u00a0 Of late my joy at his almost uncanny ability to trigger my worst enemies into paroxysms of rage is becoming almost embarrassing.\u00a0 At work, I\u2019ll be writing some mundane list or power point slide and I\u2019ll think about his NFL or Weinstein tweets and stop and smile and get some coffee and e-mail a friend about it.\u00a0 It\u2019s definitely cutting into my productivity but it\u2019s also lowering my blood pressure and overall that\u2019s good for everything including ability to do work.\u00a0 And I imagine it\u2019s having the opposite effect on my left-wing counterparts.\u00a0 They probably hear about these things and get driven into a rage spiral and that\u2019s got to be bad for the blood pressure and quality of life.\u00a0 Ah, sweet schadenfreude.<\/p>\n<p>To get back to the original point, word\u2019s getting out.\u00a0 Reach out to the unaware.\u00a0 They can be reached.\u00a0 And Trump is doing his part.\u00a0 He goes after those we aren\u2019t allowed to touch.\u00a0 The more Trump calls out the bullies the clearer it becomes that they are the problem.\u00a0 Pretty soon even Great Aunt Sophie may know what Fake News is.\u00a0 If everyone who can be reached knows what\u2019s going on, then we can figure out whether a national consensus can be reached.\u00a0 So, if 55-60% of the country can agree that the left is the problem (including the GOPE) then maybe we can turn this around.\u00a0 If not, then we\u2019re headed down the road to tribalism and identity politics and the end of the American Dream.\u00a0 But even if we end up there we\u2019re better off than if we got there without knowing why and how.\u00a0 We can dictate some of the terms of the divorce.\u00a0 Cold comfort?\u00a0 Maybe, but I\u2019ll take it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A couple of months ago I wrote a post called \u201cTalking to the Sleepwalkers\u201d in which I described how I attempted to explain what Trump<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_mi_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[5,6],"tags":[80,454,452,455,453,39,451,450],"class_list":["post-1639","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-current-events","category-trump","tag-alt-right","tag-alt-west","tag-awareness","tag-dissident-right","tag-nationalism","tag-populism","tag-red-pill","tag-talking-to-the-sleepwalkers"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.4 -
