This lunatic, in letting Scrooge’s nephew out, had<\/strong><\/p>\n

let two other people in. They were portly gentlemen,<\/strong><\/p>\n

pleasant to behold, and now stood, with their hats off,<\/strong><\/p>\n

in Scrooge’s office. They had books and papers in<\/strong><\/p>\n

their hands, and bowed to him.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Scrooge and Marley’s, I believe,” said one of the<\/strong><\/p>\n

gentlemen, referring to his list. “Have I the pleasure<\/strong><\/p>\n

of addressing Mr. Scrooge, or Mr. Marley?”<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Mr. Marley has been dead these seven years,”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Scrooge replied. “He died seven years ago, this very<\/strong><\/p>\n

night.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

“We have no doubt his liberality is well represented<\/strong><\/p>\n

by his surviving partner,” said the gentleman, presenting<\/strong><\/p>\n

his credentials.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

It certainly was; for they had been two kindred<\/strong><\/p>\n

spirits. At the ominous word “liberality,” Scrooge<\/strong><\/p>\n

frowned, and shook his head, and handed the credentials<\/strong><\/p>\n

back.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

“At this festive season of the year, Mr. Scrooge,”<\/strong><\/p>\n

said the gentleman, taking up a pen, “it is more than<\/strong><\/p>\n

usually desirable that we should make some slight<\/strong><\/p>\n

provision for the Poor and destitute, who suffer<\/strong><\/p>\n

greatly at the present time. Many thousands are in<\/strong><\/p>\n

want of common necessaries; hundreds of thousands<\/strong><\/p>\n

are in want of common comforts, sir.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Are there no prisons?” asked Scrooge.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Plenty of prisons,” said the gentleman, laying down<\/strong><\/p>\n

the pen again.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

“And the Union workhouses?” demanded Scrooge.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Are they still in operation?”<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

“They are. Still,” returned the gentleman, “I wish<\/strong><\/p>\n

I could say they were not.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

“The Treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigour,<\/strong><\/p>\n

then?” said Scrooge.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Both very busy, sir.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Oh! I was afraid, from what you said at first,<\/strong><\/p>\n

that something had occurred to stop them in their<\/strong><\/p>\n

useful course,” said Scrooge. “I’m very glad to<\/strong><\/p>\n

hear it.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Under the impression that they scarcely furnish<\/strong><\/p>\n

Christian cheer of mind or body to the multitude,”<\/strong><\/p>\n

returned the gentleman, “a few of us are endeavouring<\/strong><\/p>\n

to raise a fund to buy the Poor some meat and drink,<\/strong><\/p>\n

and means of warmth. We choose this time, because<\/strong><\/p>\n

it is a time, of all others, when Want is keenly felt,<\/strong><\/p>\n

and Abundance rejoices. What shall I put you down<\/strong><\/p>\n

for?”<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Nothing!” Scrooge replied.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

“You wish to be anonymous?”<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

“I wish to be left alone,” said Scrooge. “Since you<\/strong><\/p>\n

ask me what I wish, gentlemen, that is my answer.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I don’t make merry myself at Christmas and I can’t<\/strong><\/p>\n

afford to make idle people merry. I help to support<\/strong><\/p>\n

the establishments I have mentioned–they cost<\/strong><\/p>\n

enough; and those who are badly off must go there.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Many can’t go there; and many would rather die.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

“If they would rather die,” said Scrooge, “they had<\/strong><\/p>\n

better do it, and decrease the surplus population.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Besides–excuse me–I don’t know that.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

“But you might know it,” observed the gentleman.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

“It’s not my business,” Scrooge returned. “It’s<\/strong><\/p>\n

enough for a man to understand his own business, and<\/strong><\/p>\n

not to interfere with other people’s. Mine occupies<\/strong><\/p>\n

me constantly. Good afternoon, gentlemen!”<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Seeing clearly that it would be useless to pursue<\/strong><\/p>\n

their point, the gentlemen withdrew. Scrooge resumed<\/strong><\/p>\n

his labours with an improved opinion of himself,<\/strong><\/p>\n

and in a more facetious temper than was usual<\/strong><\/p>\n

with him.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Meanwhile the fog and darkness thickened so, that<\/strong><\/p>\n

people ran about with flaring links, proffering their<\/strong><\/p>\n

services to go before horses in carriages, and conduct<\/strong><\/p>\n

them on their way. The ancient tower of a church,<\/strong><\/p>\n

whose gruff old bell was always peeping slily down<\/strong><\/p>\n

at Scrooge out of a Gothic window in the wall, became<\/strong><\/p>\n

invisible, and struck the hours and quarters in the<\/strong><\/p>\n

clouds, with tremulous vibrations afterwards as if<\/strong><\/p>\n

its teeth were chattering in its frozen head up there.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The cold became intense. In the main street, at the<\/strong><\/p>\n

corner of the court, some labourers were repairing<\/strong><\/p>\n

the gas-pipes, and had lighted a great fire in a brazier,<\/strong><\/p>\n

round which a party of ragged men and boys were<\/strong><\/p>\n

gathered: warming their hands and winking their<\/strong><\/p>\n

eyes before the blaze in rapture. The water-plug<\/strong><\/p>\n

being left in solitude, its overflowings sullenly congealed,<\/strong><\/p>\n

and turned to misanthropic ice. The brightness<\/strong><\/p>\n

of the shops where holly sprigs and berries<\/strong><\/p>\n

crackled in the lamp heat of the windows, made pale<\/strong><\/p>\n

faces ruddy as they passed. Poulterers’ and grocers’<\/strong><\/p>\n

trades became a splendid joke: a glorious pageant,<\/strong><\/p>\n

with which it was next to impossible to believe that<\/strong><\/p>\n

such dull principles as bargain and sale had anything<\/strong><\/p>\n

to do. The Lord Mayor, in the stronghold of the<\/strong><\/p>\n

mighty Mansion House, gave orders to his fifty cooks<\/strong><\/p>\n

and butlers to keep Christmas as a Lord Mayor’s<\/strong><\/p>\n

household should; and even the little tailor, whom he<\/strong><\/p>\n

had fined five shillings on the previous Monday for<\/strong><\/p>\n

being drunk and bloodthirsty in the streets, stirred up<\/strong><\/p>\n

to-morrow’s pudding in his garret, while his lean<\/strong><\/p>\n

wife and the baby sallied out to buy the beef.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Foggier yet, and colder. Piercing, searching, biting<\/strong><\/p>\n

cold. If the good Saint Dunstan had but nipped<\/strong><\/p>\n

the Evil Spirit’s nose with a touch of such weather<\/strong><\/p>\n

as that, instead of using his familiar weapons, then<\/strong><\/p>\n

indeed he would have roared to lusty purpose. The<\/strong><\/p>\n

owner of one scant young nose, gnawed and mumbled<\/strong><\/p>\n

by the hungry cold as bones are gnawed by dogs,<\/strong><\/p>\n

stooped down at Scrooge’s keyhole to regale him with<\/strong><\/p>\n

a Christmas carol: but at the first sound of<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 “God bless you, merry gentleman!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 May nothing you dismay!”<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Scrooge seized the ruler with such energy of action,<\/strong><\/p>\n

that the singer fled in terror, leaving the keyhole to<\/strong><\/p>\n

the fog and even more congenial frost.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

At length the hour of shutting up the counting-house<\/strong><\/p>\n

arrived. With an ill-will Scrooge dismounted from his<\/strong><\/p>\n

stool, and tacitly admitted the fact to the expectant<\/strong><\/p>\n

clerk in the Tank, who instantly snuffed his candle out,<\/strong><\/p>\n

and put on his hat.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

“You’ll want all day to-morrow, I suppose?” said<\/strong><\/p>\n

Scrooge.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

“If quite convenient, sir.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

“It’s not convenient,” said Scrooge, “and it’s not<\/strong><\/p>\n

fair. If I was to stop half-a-crown for it, you’d<\/strong><\/p>\n

think yourself ill-used, I’ll be bound?”<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The clerk smiled faintly.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

“And yet,” said Scrooge, “you don’t think me ill-used,<\/strong><\/p>\n

when I pay a day’s wages for no work.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The clerk observed that it was only once a year.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

“A poor excuse for picking a man’s pocket every<\/strong><\/p>\n

twenty-fifth of December!” said Scrooge, buttoning<\/strong><\/p>\n

his great-coat to the chin. “But I suppose you must<\/strong><\/p>\n

have the whole day. Be here all the earlier next<\/strong><\/p>\n

morning.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The clerk promised that he would; and Scrooge<\/strong><\/p>\n

walked out with a growl. The office was closed in a<\/strong><\/p>\n

twinkling, and the clerk, with the long ends of his<\/strong><\/p>\n

white comforter dangling below his waist (for he<\/strong><\/p>\n

boasted no great-coat), went down a slide on Cornhill,<\/strong><\/p>\n

at the end of a lane of boys, twenty times, in<\/strong><\/p>\n

honour of its being Christmas Eve, and then ran home<\/strong><\/p>\n

to Camden Town as hard as he could pelt, to play<\/strong><\/p>\n

at blindman’s-buff.<\/strong><\/p>\n
