They were portly gentlemen,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>pleasant to behold, and now stood, with their hats off,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>in Scrooge&#8217;s office. They had books and papers in<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>their hands, and bowed to him.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Scrooge and Marley&#8217;s, I believe,&#8221; said one of the<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>gentlemen, referring to his list. &#8220;Have I the pleasure<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>of addressing Mr. Scrooge, or Mr. Marley?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Mr. Marley has been dead these seven years,&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Scrooge replied. &#8220;He died seven years ago, this very<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>night.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;We have no doubt his liberality is well represented<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>by his surviving partner,&#8221; said the gentleman, presenting<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>his credentials.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>It certainly was; for they had been two kindred<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>spirits. At the ominous word &#8220;liberality,&#8221; Scrooge<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>frowned, and shook his head, and handed the credentials<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>back.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;At this festive season of the year, Mr. Scrooge,&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>said the gentleman, taking up a pen, &#8220;it is more than<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>usually desirable that we should make some slight<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>provision for the Poor and destitute, who suffer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>greatly at the present time. Many thousands are in<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>want of common necessaries; hundreds of thousands<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>are in want of common comforts, sir.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Are there no prisons?&#8221; asked Scrooge.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Plenty of prisons,&#8221; said the gentleman, laying down<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>the pen again.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;And the Union workhouses?&#8221; demanded Scrooge.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Are they still in operation?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;They are. Still,&#8221; returned the gentleman, &#8220;I wish<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I could say they were not.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;The Treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigour,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>then?&#8221; said Scrooge.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Both very busy, sir.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Oh! I was afraid, from what you said at first,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>that something had occurred to stop them in their<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>useful course,&#8221; said Scrooge. &#8220;I&#8217;m very glad to<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>hear it.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Under the impression that they scarcely furnish<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Christian cheer of mind or body to the multitude,&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>returned the gentleman, &#8220;a few of us are endeavouring<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>to raise a fund to buy the Poor some meat and drink,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>and means of warmth. We choose this time, because<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>it is a time, of all others, when Want is keenly felt,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>and Abundance rejoices. What shall I put you down<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>for?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Nothing!&#8221; Scrooge replied.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;You wish to be anonymous?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;I wish to be left alone,&#8221; said Scrooge. &#8220;Since you<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>ask me what I wish, gentlemen, that is my answer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I don&#8217;t make merry myself at Christmas and I can&#8217;t<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>afford to make idle people merry. I help to support<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>the establishments I have mentioned&#8211;they cost<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>enough; and those who are badly off must go there.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Many can&#8217;t go there; and many would rather die.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;If they would rather die,&#8221; said Scrooge, &#8220;they had<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>better do it, and decrease the surplus population.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Besides&#8211;excuse me&#8211;I don&#8217;t know that.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;But you might know it,&#8221; observed the gentleman.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;It&#8217;s not my business,&#8221; Scrooge returned. &#8220;It&#8217;s<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>enough for a man to understand his own business, and<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>not to interfere with other people&#8217;s. Mine occupies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>me constantly. Good afternoon, gentlemen!&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Seeing clearly that it would be useless to pursue<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>their point, the gentlemen withdrew. Scrooge resumed<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>his labours with an improved opinion of himself,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>and in a more facetious temper than was usual<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>with him.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Meanwhile the fog and darkness thickened so, that<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>people ran about with flaring links, proffering their<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>services to go before horses in carriages, and conduct<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>them on their way. The ancient tower of a church,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>whose gruff old bell was always peeping slily down<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>at Scrooge out of a Gothic window in the wall, became<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>invisible, and struck the hours and quarters in the<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>clouds, with tremulous vibrations afterwards as if<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>its teeth were chattering in its frozen head up there.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The cold became intense. In the main street, at the<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>corner of the court, some labourers were repairing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>the gas-pipes, and had lighted a great fire in a brazier,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>round which a party of ragged men and boys were<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>gathered: warming their hands and winking their<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>eyes before the blaze in rapture. The water-plug<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>being left in solitude, its overflowings sullenly congealed,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>and turned to misanthropic ice. The brightness<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>of the shops where holly sprigs and berries<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>crackled in the lamp heat of the windows, made pale<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>faces ruddy as they passed. Poulterers&#8217; and grocers&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>trades became a splendid joke: a glorious pageant,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>with which it was next to impossible to believe that<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>such dull principles as bargain and sale had anything<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>to do. The Lord Mayor, in the stronghold of the<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>mighty Mansion House, gave orders to his fifty cooks<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>and butlers to keep Christmas as a Lord Mayor&#8217;s<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>household should; and even the little tailor, whom he<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>had fined five shillings on the previous Monday for<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>being drunk and bloodthirsty in the streets, stirred up<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>to-morrow&#8217;s pudding in his garret, while his lean<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>wife and the baby sallied out to buy the beef.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Foggier yet, and colder. Piercing, searching, biting<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>cold. If the good Saint Dunstan had but nipped<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>the Evil Spirit&#8217;s nose with a touch of such weather<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>as that, instead of using his familiar weapons, then<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>indeed he would have roared to lusty purpose. The<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>owner of one scant young nose, gnawed and mumbled<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>by the hungry cold as bones are gnawed by dogs,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>stooped down at Scrooge&#8217;s keyhole to regale him with<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>a Christmas carol: but at the first sound of<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;God bless you, merry gentleman!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 May nothing you dismay!&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Scrooge seized the ruler with such energy of action,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>that the singer fled in terror, leaving the keyhole to<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>the fog and even more congenial frost.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>At length the hour of shutting up the counting-house<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>arrived. With an ill-will Scrooge dismounted from his<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>stool, and tacitly admitted the fact to the expectant<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>clerk in the Tank, who instantly snuffed his candle out,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>and put on his hat.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;You&#8217;ll want all day to-morrow, I suppose?&#8221; said<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Scrooge.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;If quite convenient, sir.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;It&#8217;s not convenient,&#8221; said Scrooge, &#8220;and it&#8217;s not<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>fair. If I was to stop half-a-crown for it, you&#8217;d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>think yourself ill-used, I&#8217;ll be bound?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The clerk smiled faintly.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;And yet,&#8221; said Scrooge, &#8220;you don&#8217;t think me ill-used,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>when I pay a day&#8217;s wages for no work.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The clerk observed that it was only once a year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;A poor excuse for picking a man&#8217;s pocket every<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>twenty-fifth of December!&#8221; said Scrooge, buttoning<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>his great-coat to the chin. &#8220;But I suppose you must<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>have the whole day. Be here all the earlier next<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>morning.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The clerk promised that he would; and Scrooge<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>walked out with a growl.
