Not everyone can be saved.\u00a0 Not everyone wants to be saved.\u00a0 Not everyone should be saved because some people are part of the problem.<\/p>\n
I was talking to an old friend and he was very excited about all the problems that the Democrats are having right now and the prospects for Republican success in the midterms and beyond.\u00a0 And it was fun.\u00a0 But I had to remind him that we\u2019ve seen this play before.\u00a0 Unless there is someone with a plan that includes capitalizing on these opportunities in the form of meaningful change to the status quo then it will be just part of familiar Democrat\/Republican Two Step.\u00a0 They take a giant step forward; we take a tiny step sideways, then repeat ad infinitum.\u00a0 I\u2019m pretty sure he didn\u2019t hear a word I said.\u00a0 Now this way of thinking isn\u2019t the primary problem but it sure as hell isn\u2019t a solution.<\/p>\n
Somebody who definitely is part of the problem is Mitt Romney, the quintessential RINO.\u00a0 Imagine anyone who could be Governor of Massachusetts and US Senator for Utah.\u00a0 Think of how supple a spine you would have to possess to bend into the pretzel needed to accommodate those two elected offices.\u00a0 He is an example of who can\u2019t be saved.\u00a0 In fact, I claim that ejecting him from the Republican party should be one of, if not the<\/u> highest priority of the Right.\u00a0 The man is a poison in the body politic.\u00a0 And if the people of Utah can\u2019t see that then they\u2019re doomed to become just another Colorado.\u00a0 People like Romney, Cheney and Murkowski need to be targeted for primary challenges and never permitted back in the party.\u00a0 Let them become Democrats and peddle their brand of poison to their rightful customers.\u00a0 In this endeavor it\u2019s instructive to see just how sound Donald Trump\u2019s instincts are when he goes after the back stabbers and advocates for their replacement.\u00a0 Even if the replacement politician is almost as bad, hell, even if he\u2019s worse, the important effect is teaching the snakes that they won\u2019t benefit from their treachery.\u00a0 It\u2019s a simple feedback loop.<\/p>\n
And in a similar but less extreme case are the \u201callies\u201d we\u2019ve picked up.\u00a0 People Matt Taibbi and Glenn Greenwald are honest men.\u00a0 They are liberals.\u00a0 They believe in left wing causes.\u00a0 They want the same ends that our enemies want.\u00a0 The only difference is that they are also committed to the constitutional freedoms that all Americans used to subscribe to.\u00a0 In other words, they don\u2019t believe that the ends justify the means.\u00a0 At least now that they\u2019ve seen how it translates into their profession.\u00a0 I applaud their honesty and scruples.\u00a0 But I am not so foolish to let them become my voice in the media world.\u00a0 I think of them as an honest foe.\u00a0 Honorable and to be respected but not an ally.\u00a0 I can see situations where some kind of support for them could produce positive results for our side.\u00a0 But my formulation is, \u201cThe enemy of my enemy is my enemy\u2019s enemy and no more than that.\u201d<\/p>\n
In the end, the only way we will make progress will be to make common cause with those who agree with us on a relatively broad set of principles and social norms.\u00a0 It won\u2019t require us to become Puritans.\u00a0 But we will have to eject all sorts of extremists and nonconformists.\u00a0 Luckily, we won\u2019t have to burn anyone at the stake.\u00a0 We can just banish them to Blue State America.\u00a0 In fact, with something like thirty states to choose from I could see even the Red States presenting more than one vision of what a conservative republic should look like.\u00a0 After all, Alabama isn\u2019t Alaska and Utah isn\u2019t West Virginia.\u00a0 I won\u2019t use the awful expression a big tent.\u00a0 Let\u2019s say there are a bunch of small tents that make up our federation.<\/p>\n
So, I\u2019ve made my peace with living under a smaller tent.\u00a0 I\u2019m a live and let live kind of guy as long as I don\u2019t have to live by rules that I find abhorrent.\u00a0 I\u2019d rather see small communities living by rules that everyone there believes in.\u00a0 How that ends up happening is dependent on how the macropolitical situation evolves.\u00a0 Under the present system the only way we can do this is under a chartered community that regulates many communal functions like law enforcement, education, drug policy, even social activities.\u00a0 But if the states obtain greater autonomy these things can be enshrined in the state constitutions and reinforced by the powers of the state.<\/p>\n
So, you can\u2019t say everyone.\u00a0 Not everyone can live together.\u00a0 To contradict Rodney King, \u201cNo, we can\u2019t all just get along.\u201d<\/p>\n
But we can agree to disagree.\u00a0 And that\u2019s what we should do.\u00a0 After the revolution we\u2019ll pack Crazy Aunt Alice off to San Francisco and when the deadbeats stop receiving welfare checks they\u2019ll be happy to take a bus trip to live in New York City (assuming there still is a New York after the cannibal reset).\u00a0 And we\u2019ll all be better off for it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
