In that old Edgar Allen Poe story, the sailor describes how his boat is trapped by the whirlpool and progressively accelerates as it\u2019s drawn deeper and deeper into the maw of the maelstrom.\u00a0 That\u2019s kind of how it feels every day that I see what new atrocity has splatted onto the front page.\u00a0 Weinstein, Damon, Crowe, Affleck, Clooney, Meryl Streep, Mark Halperin, Roy Price, James Toback, Corey Feldman\u2019s claims and now Kevin Spacey.\u00a0 The beat keeps accelerating and the depravity keeps amping higher.\u00a0 Now Rosie O\u2019Donnell is saying \u201ceveryone always knew.\u201d\u00a0 And they kept quiet?\u00a0 All those progressive saints let young women and younger boys enter the lion\u2019s den without saying a word or warning them?\u00a0 At this rate it\u2019ll be a full-on Fellini movie with the master of ceremonies played by Jeffrey Epstein.\u00a0 As glad as I am that the boil is being lanced it\u2019s a dizzying display of putridity that seems to be oozing out of Hollywood from every direction.\u00a0 The only question seems to be does it end or just go on forever until there isn\u2019t a single big name shot caller or movie star not implicated in either the depravity or the cover-ups?\u00a0 So, when does the media call out all these phonies and hypocrites on their sanctimony?\u00a0 All the women\u2019s marches and preening at the Oscars about their superior morality?\u00a0 And for pity\u2019s sake when do they get Whoopi Goldberg and Meryl Streep and the rest of the phonies to apologize for their defense of Roman Polansky?\u00a0 Or are \u201cgeniuses\u201d given a Hollywood get out of jail free card for rape of children?<\/p>\n
At the rate it\u2019s going I wouldn\u2019t be surprised if some of the older, less powerful producers start getting named.\u00a0 And then who knows?\u00a0 Maybe people might even start to believe Mia Farrow\u2019s daughter and get Woody Allen kicked out of Hollywood.\u00a0 That would be something.<\/p>\n
Of course, it\u2019s hard to say if Hollywood will actually follow through on some of these banishments.\u00a0 I read that Netflix is cancelling season six of House of Cards.\u00a0 But I think that means they will continue with the 2018 season.\u00a0 Think of that.\u00a0 An accused pedophile is starring in one of the highest rated television dramas.\u00a0 So, will public outrage shut down that set or will money triumph?\u00a0 I guess stay tuned.<\/p>\n
And the other thing to remember is that this problem is so wide-spread and so endemic that there are probably actors and directors that you like, that you think are good people who will be implicated.\u00a0 It\u2019s bound to dishearten any cinemaphile.<\/p>\n
Well anyway, the show will continue and seems still to be building up a full head of steam.\u00a0 And it\u2019s having a very interesting effect.\u00a0 The Clooney\/Damon feature Suburbicon opened up to laughably bad box office numbers.\u00a0 Now granted, Clooney\u2019s directorial (and acting) efforts have been putrid so it could just be audiences trying not to waste money on painfully unentertaining fare.\u00a0 But it could also be people punishing the perps and the enablers.\u00a0 Hollywood just finished a dismal summer and even the super hero and other tentpole blockbusters were duds.\u00a0 Maybe Hollywood is starting to get their comeuppances.\u00a0 The right has stopped going to most of their movies.\u00a0 Perhaps Gen Z doesn\u2019t like their stuff either.\u00a0 If that\u2019s the case, this sex scandal may be the straw that actually does break the camel\u2019s back.\u00a0 And really, it couldn\u2019t happen to a nicer camel.<\/p>\n
But as a fun experiment it would be interesting to see if the dissident right can figure out a way to rub Hollywood\u2019s nose in this at Oscar time.\u00a0 Maybe some large display opposite the theater calling out all the phonies and reminding them that they are a cesspool.\u00a0 Maybe a mock awards ceremony called the Harvies.\u00a0 Awards could be given for hypocrisy, greatest number of victims and even some kind of lifetime achievement award for getting away with actual rape for the longest period of time.\u00a0 It could be called the Roman.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
