{"id":17317,"date":"2022-01-10T00:42:51","date_gmt":"2022-01-10T05:42:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/?p=17317"},"modified":"2022-01-10T00:42:51","modified_gmt":"2022-01-10T05:42:51","slug":"star-trek-the-original-series-complete-series-review-season-3-episode-19-requiem-for-methuselah","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/index.php\/2022\/01\/10\/star-trek-the-original-series-complete-series-review-season-3-episode-19-requiem-for-methuselah\/","title":{"rendered":"Star Trek \u2013 The Original Series \u2013 Complete Series Review \u2013 Season 3 Episode 19 \u2013 Requiem for Methuselah"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Enterprise is infested with Rigellian Fever which is like COVID only dangerous.\u00a0 Kirk, Spock and McCoy beam down to planetoid blah, blah, blah to get unobtanium which will cure the fever.\u00a0 There they meet the robot guard of the planetoid\u2019s owner, Mr. Flint.\u00a0 After some posturing Flint agrees to help McCoy make a serum from the mineral.<\/p>\n<p>In his home, Flint has rare masterpieces of art by Leonardo da Vinci and Johannes Brahms.\u00a0 And it turns out he actually is those two men and many other like Alexander the Great, Solomon and perhaps the greatest of all, Donald Trump.\u00a0 He was a Mesopotamian soldier from around 4,000 B.C. and after being stabbed through the heart he discovered that he was immortal.\u00a0 And he has a mate named Rayna who wears the form fitting silvery dress that is the true mark of an android woman, which they determine she is.\u00a0 Of course, Kirk falls in love with Rayna and Flint and Kirk do battle over her.\u00a0 But when she has to choose between these two manly men her circuits burn out and she dies.\u00a0 When they return to the ship to save the crew with the cure, McCoy reveals that he has determined that Flint\u2019s immortality was voided when he left Earth and he will die after the rest of a normal life.<\/p>\n<p>This is a very unique episode.\u00a0 The concept of the immortal human who has been so many famous men is brilliant.\u00a0 What they do with this concept is not so brilliant.\u00a0 Having Kirk go through all his typical libido exercises is embarrassing.\u00a0 But we do get to reach the heights of the Shatner Mockery Index.\u00a0 I think the best examples of this are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>When Flint shrinks the Enterprise to a model about a foot long, Kirk stares into the bridge viewport and we see his huge head looking anguished in the bridge screen.<\/li>\n<li>When Kirk first declares his love for Rayna, he makes all the spastic Kirk faces he\u2019s so famous for.<\/li>\n<li>When Rayna declares herself independent of Flint\u2019s orders, Kirk starts crowing about how she\u2019s \u201chuman down to the last blood cell!\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It\u2019s probably only my subjective enjoyment of the concept of a science fiction story with a man that has lived through all of our history and been so many famous men that saves this episode from my scorn.\u00a0 Objectively it has many of the same weaknesses that the season three episodes suffer from.\u00a0 But I\u2019m fond of it for the reason I\u2019ve stated.\u00a0 So, I\u2019ll mark it as a 7\u00a0 \/\/ \u00a09.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Enterprise is infested with Rigellian Fever which is like COVID only dangerous.\u00a0 Kirk, Spock and McCoy beam down to planetoid blah, blah, blah to<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_mi_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[237,4,244,2149,240],"tags":[2150,3507,38,1355,44,309,265,1691,293,154,1692,837],"class_list":["post-17317","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-reviews","category-sff","category-sff-tv-reviews","category-star-trek","category-tv-reviews","tag-gene-roddenberry","tag-requiem-for-methuselah","tag-review","tag-reviews","tag-sci-fi","tag-sci-fi-tv-review","tag-science-fiction","tag-sff-tv-show-reviews","tag-star-trek","tag-tv-review","tag-tv-reviews","tag-william-shatner"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.4 -
