Other than Wallace Beery who starred and Lewis Stone as the Warden I don\u2019t remember ever having seen any of the other cast.\u00a0 This is a very early \u201ctalkie\u201d and so the acting is a bit broad.<\/p>\n
(Spoiler Alert \u2013 Skip down to last paragraph to avoid spoilers and read recommendation)<\/strong><\/p>\n An upper-class young man, Kent, is sentenced to ten years in prison for killing a man in an automobile accident while driving drunk.\u00a0 He is put in a crowded cell with the two toughest prisoners.\u00a0 Wallace Beery is \u201cMachine Gun Butch\u201d and the other prisoner is a master thief named Morgan.<\/p>\n Kent gets into conflicts with most of the prisoners because of his soft upbringing so he joins up with one of the prison rats and agrees to give information to the guards in return for lightening his sentence.\u00a0 Kent has a beautiful sister Anne.\u00a0 Morgan sees her when she comes to visit her brother and falls in love with her.\u00a0 Because of a frame up by Kent, Morgan loses his imminent parole chance.\u00a0 When an opportunity occurs Morgan escapes from the prison and goes to see Anne.\u00a0 She figures out that he is an escapee but helps him escape pursuit.\u00a0 Somehow or other they strike up a romance and he even comes home to visit her parents!<\/p>\n But eventually he is recaptured and arrives back in prison just as Butch is plotting a major jail break.\u00a0 But Kent rats them out and the escape becomes a riot with Butch and his men holding the guards as hostages and both sides blazing away at each other with machine guns.\u00a0 Finally Butch declares that he will kill all the guards one by one if his men aren\u2019t allowed to escape.\u00a0 When Butch kills the head guard, the Warden calls for the Army to bring in tanks to break up the riot.<\/p>\n Morgan decides to save the guards by locking them in a cell with a solid steel door and throwing away the key.\u00a0 Butch decides that Morgan is the rat and goes gunning for him.\u00a0 In the melee Kent is killed in the crossfire and butch and Morgan wound each other in a gunfight.\u00a0 When Butch discovers that it was Kent who sold him out, he and Morgan reconcile with Butch dying of his wounds.\u00a0 The tanks overcome the prisoners\u2019 resistance and order is restored.\u00a0 Afterward Morgan is hailed as a hero for saving the guards\u2019 lives.\u00a0 He is pardoned and upon getting out he is welcomed out by his fianc\u00e9e Anne.<\/p>\n This movie is a parody of prison.\u00a0 Butch and most of the other prisoners and guards are caricatures of the stereotypes that we would come to expect in movies about prison.\u00a0 But I found myself enjoying the movie mostly because Wallace Beery is an enjoyable comic actor in most of the movies I\u2019ve seen him in.\u00a0 And how can you dislike a movie that features the prisoners setting up and betting on and cheering for their favorites in a cockroach race.\u00a0 Especially when we find out that the race was fixed by the favorite being glued to the ground with bubble gum!\u00a0 I don\u2019t think I can recommend this movie for anyone in particular except for fans of Wallace Beery.\u00a0 Good old Long John Silver.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Other than Wallace Beery who starred and Lewis Stone as the Warden I don\u2019t remember ever having seen any of the other cast.\u00a0 This is<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_mi_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[239,238,237],"tags":[1238,3621,43,38,1355,332],"class_list":["post-18532","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-movie-reviews","category-classic-movie-reviews","category-reviews","tag-hollywood-golden-era","tag-lewis-stone","tag-movie-review","tag-review","tag-reviews","tag-wallace-beery"],"yoast_head":"\n
