Autofocusing with the Sony A7 IV.\u00a0 Some Tests and Thoughts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lately I\u2019ve been changing the way I take macro shots of active insects like bumble bees.\u00a0 Previously I have used magnification and single AF.\u00a0 This works well for slow insects.\u00a0 But not as well for fast moving butterflies and bees.\u00a0 So talking to someone who does a lot macro he recommended continuous autofocus.\u00a0 So I tried it.\u00a0 One problem is that magnified view doesn\u2019t work during continuous AF.\u00a0 But what I did find was that the keeper rate did improve greatly for fast movers like bumble bees.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/DSC07748.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19216\" src=\"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/DSC07748.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2505\" height=\"1275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/DSC07748.jpg 2505w, https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/DSC07748-300x153.jpg 300w, https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/DSC07748-1024x521.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/DSC07748-768x391.jpg 768w, (max-width: 2505px) 100vw, 2505px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And that got me thinking.\u00a0 A-mount lenses also don\u2019t have magnified view in AF modes.\u00a0 So it occurred to me that these lenses would also become more accurate in continuous AF macro shots.\u00a0 So I tried out the Minolta 200mm f\\4 macro lens and it worked quite well on larger insects like bumble bees and dragon flies.\u00a0 Then I tried it on really tiny flies and this was haphazard.\u00a0 For these I found throwing it into manual focus and using magnified view was the only way to get really tiny critters in perfect focus.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/DSC07838.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/DSC07838.jpg 1944w, https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/DSC07838-300x189.jpg 300w, https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/DSC07838-1024x645.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/DSC07838-768x484.jpg 768w, https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/DSC07838-1536x968.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1944px) 100vw, 1944px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/DSC07866.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19218\" (max-width: 1463px) 100vw, 1463px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And that is limiting with live creatures in the outside environment where every puff of breeze ruins the focus.\u00a0 So this leads me to think that the 200 macro will be limited to larger insects.\u00a0 The Sony e-mount 90mm macro will be much better for the really tiny things.\u00a0 And for slower insects I\u2019ll use magnified view and single AF.\u00a0 For faster bugs I\u2019ll go with continuous AF and spray and pray I get the perfect shot.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lately I\u2019ve been changing the way
