\u2013 OCF Update \u2013 This\u2019N\u2019That"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I find the increasingly surreal reality around me both dizzying and slightly depressing.\u00a0 So, I\u2019m trying to distract myself from it with more pleasant subjects.\u00a0 Last week I started listening to some of Wagner\u2019s \u201cDer Ring des Nibelungen.\u201d\u00a0 Unfortunately, the library I\u2019m borrowing it from didn\u2019t have the entire four opera set (Sir George Solti\u2019s version) available.\u00a0 In fact, all they\u2019ve sent me so far is the third opera, Siegfried.<\/p>\n<p>As promised, there are a lot of people singing at each other in German with extremely powerful voices and what seem like lots of emotional problems.\u00a0 I confess that my lack of German is hampering my appreciation of the dialog but I found many of the melodic parts of the soundtrack very stirring.\u00a0 I was disappointed that the library didn\u2019t send me Die Walker (\u201cThe Valkyrie\u201d).\u00a0 I\u2019ve always admired the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KZTE9MDoaLs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bugs Bunny version where Elmer Fudd sings along<\/a> to the \u201cFlight of the Valkyrie\u201d with the magnificent refrain \u201c<em>kill the wabbit<\/em><em>, kill the wabbit, kill the wabbit<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 It seemed the height of musical sophistication at the time.\u00a0 So far, the experiment has been amusing.\u00a0 We shall see how it develops.<\/p>\n<p>After watching \u201cThe Northman\u201d I\u2019ve decided to review some of the other versions of the play, Hamlet.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been a fan of Olivier\u2019s version but I think I want to watch Gibson\u2019s and Branagh\u2019s versions again.\u00a0 One of the only advantages that Branagh\u2019s version had is that it\u2019s comprehensive.\u00a0 Olivier left out the characters of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern and although I see why he did it (time constraints) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6LO4EQcMR2Q\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I do miss those sections<\/a>.\u00a0 Next summer I\u2019ll try to attend a live performance of Hamlet somewhere.\u00a0 There used to be a Shakespeare company in the Berkshires of Massachusetts that I sometimes attended.\u00a0 They were pretty good.\u00a0 I\u2019ll have to see if they still exist and find out if they\u2019re covering Hamlet next year.\u00a0 If not I\u2019m sure some place in New England there is a production.\u00a0 After all it\u2019s supposed to be the best play by the best playwright in the English language.\u00a0 Surely someone is still doing it.\u00a0 My only fear is that it will be exuberantly woke and all the characters will be wheelchair-bound transgender vegans.\u00a0 That\u2019s bound to take away from the dueling scene.<\/p>\n<p>My scorecard for the November elections is kind of encouraging at the moment.\u00a0 It seems like the Democrats are trying to psych themselves up.\u00a0 There\u2019s lots of talk about all these women who registered to vote and all the passion about abortion.\u00a0 But there is a definite sense that even people like Chuck Todd sense a shellacking in the making.\u00a0 Losing the House is already a foregone conclusion.\u00a0 And it\u2019s starting to look like the Senate will also go to the Republicans although whether it will be one seat or a handful is hard to say.\u00a0 What with Mitch McConnell actively working against some of the Republican candidates it\u2019s hard to figure exactly how the numbers will pan out.\u00a0 Mitch really is an awful man to have as an ally.\u00a0 But even he may not be enough to throw the Senate to the Dems while Creepy Uncle Joe is undermining what\u2019s left of Western civilization.<\/p>\n<p>As for the Ukraine war, well that rolling disaster is just another example of the dysfunctional Deep State tampering with the world as if it were their personal Frankenstein\u2019s laboratory.\u00a0 There seems to be no end to their appetite for destruction.\u00a0 But this one may be the payoff.\u00a0 I get the feeling even the Germans have had enough winning.\u00a0 They\u2019re going to go on a low temperature, low power diet this winter and maybe even these true believers may finally say enough.\u00a0 Who knows, even their died in the wool Greens may beg for some nuclear power this winter when their toes freeze off.<\/p>\n<p>Well anyway, that\u2019s what\u2019s going on today.\u00a0 I hope your week has begun
