{"id":21467,"date":"2022-12-14T20:38:49","date_gmt":"2022-12-15T01:38:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/?p=21467"},"modified":"2022-12-14T23:41:24","modified_gmt":"2022-12-15T04:41:24","slug":"nuclear-fusion-breakthrough-not-so-much","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/index.php\/2022\/12\/14\/nuclear-fusion-breakthrough-not-so-much\/","title":{"rendered":"Nuclear Fusion Breakthrough \u2013 Not So Much"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/science\/2022\/12\/what-enabled-the-big-boost-in-fusion-energy-announced-this-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">There was a giant uproar<\/a>, <strong>\u201cOn Tuesday, the US Department of Energy (DOE) confirmed information that had leaked out earlier this week: its National Ignition Facility had reached a new milestone, releasing significantly more fusion energy than was supplied by the lasers that triggered the fusion.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Specifically, the breakthrough was,<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIn terms of specifics, the lasers of the National Ignition Facility deposited 2.05 megajoules into their target in that experiment. Measurements of the energy released afterward indicate that the resulting fusion reactions set loose 3.15 megajoules, a factor of roughly 1.5. That&#8217;s the highest output-to-input ratio yet achieved in a fusion experiment.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But, not so fast!!!!!<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cAs we noted above, the 3 MJ released in this experiment is a big step up from the amount of energy deposited in the target by the National Ignition Facility&#8217;s lasers.
