{"id":21493,"date":"2022-12-17T16:36:06","date_gmt":"2022-12-17T21:36:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/?p=21493"},"modified":"2022-12-17T16:36:06","modified_gmt":"2022-12-17T21:36:06","slug":"research-into-non-ferrous-alloys-yields-a-truly-high-strength-material","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/index.php\/2022\/12\/17\/research-into-non-ferrous-alloys-yields-a-truly-high-strength-material\/","title":{"rendered":"Research Into Non-Ferrous Alloys Yields a Truly High Strength Material"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I was working for a design engineering firm, we often looked at exotic metals and alloys as solutions to chemical reactor material for highly corrosive compounds.\u00a0 Nickel, chromium and cobalt alloys such as the Hastelloy B and C metals were extremely attractive for their corrosion resistance and strength properties.\u00a0 Of course, they were difficult to work with because their hardness made them difficult to cut and mill.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/scitechdaily.com\/scientists-blown-away-by-the-toughest-material-on-earth-unexpected-transformation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Now research is coming out<\/a> that alloys consisting of equal quantities of those three metals have extremely high strength and ductility.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe toughness of this material near liquid helium temperatures (20 kelvin, -424 \u00b0Fahrenheit) is as high as 500 megapascals square root meters. In the same units, the toughness of a piece of silicon is one, the aluminum airframe in passenger airplanes is about 35, and the toughness of some of the best steels is around 100. So, 500, it\u2019s a staggering number,\u201d said research co-leader Robert Ritchie, a senior faculty scientist in Berkeley Lab\u2019s Materials Sciences Division and the Chua Professor of Engineering at UC Berkeley.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you notice this extreme toughness measure is recorded at -424 \u00b0F.\u00a0 This implies that the toughness number is not as high at normal temperatures.\u00a0 Now this is unusual.\u00a0 Most materials become brittle at cryogenic temperatures not more ductile.\u00a0 But I assume the toughness they\u2019re measuring is still at very high levels for ambient conditions.\u00a0 A material that\u2019s five times stronger than the strongest steels is remarkable.\u00a0 Even double or triple is unheard of.<\/p>\n<p>These alloys are very expensive and would start out being used in the most critical applications such as space flight.\u00a0 But over the course of time these new materials will find other applications.\u00a0 Maybe one day this material might end up in the beams of a mile high building or an enormous bridge.\u00a0 And before you know it they\u2019ll make golf clubs and tennis rackets out of it.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s gratifying to see that not all the physical sciences and engineering fields have completely ground to a halt during the Age of Biden.\u00a0 Possibly there is still hope of our civilization escaping another dark age.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When I was working for a design engineering firm, we often looked at exotic metals and alloys as solutions to chemical reactor material for highly<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_mi_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[5,3545],"tags":[3824,3822,3823,165],"class_list":["post-21493","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-current-events","category-science","tag-alloy","tag-engineering","tag-material-science","tag-science"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.4 -
