April Snowstorm<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

We got about six inches of wet snow last night and we\u2019ll probably get another coupla-three-inches over the course of the day today. So, for the first time this winter I took the snow blower out and ran it around the upper driveway.\u00a0 It was repaired before the winter and the foot of the housing was adjusted higher.\u00a0 So now it leaves about a half inch of snow on the ground.\u00a0 With dry snow this isn\u2019t an issue but the wet stuff we got last night can gum up the works and you end up with snow compacting into slushy ice and the blower riding on top of the ice and before you know it there\u2019s a four-inch frozen layer that you have to remove by shovel.<\/p>\n

But honestly, I think it was enjoyable to go out and do some work.\u00a0 All of this will be gone in less than a week.\u00a0 All I\u2019ve got to do is make sure I can get the cars in and out of the driveway and the rest of it will melt more or less on its own.\u00a0 So I spent a couple of hours today with about half the time being shovel work on very heavy wet snow.\u00a0 And I\u2019m feeling energized because of it.<\/p>\n

Winter is rearing its ugly head for sure.\u00a0 Eight or nine inches of wet show is nothing to scorn but knowing that it won\u2019t be lying around for three months is a big deal.\u00a0 It\u2019s three weeks to celestial spring.\u00a0 Sure, we can have three feet of snow on April Fool\u2019s Day.\u00a0 It\u2019s already been proven.\u00a0 But winter has run out of time to break our backs or our spirits.<\/p>\n

Right now, I\u2019m looking out the balcony door at the snow sifting down through the still winter air.\u00a0 It\u2019s kind of beautiful.\u00a0 I can hear the red winged black birds squawking around Camera Girl\u2019s bird feeders.\u00a0 This week hundreds of them have appeared and swarmed the area.\u00a0 Maybe it\u2019s their mating season or something.\u00a0 But all the noise tells me something about the imminence of Spring.\u00a0 The daffodils that appeared last week are buried in the wet snow.\u00a0 But they\u2019ve got some kind of anti-freeze in their cells that will keep them from dying.\u00a0 The mallards have been wading around the pond and their ducklings will be sure to appear soon.<\/p>\n

Around Dunwich there\u2019s all kinds of excitement.\u00a0 The budget is a shambles and we have no money.\u00a0 The peasants have broken out the torches and pitchforks.\u00a0 They\u2019ll be marching to First Selectman Cthulhu\u2019s lair soon just in time to be his first Black Sabbath feast.\u00a0 In my new role as his \u201cLeast Lackey\u201d I will be in charge of manning the barbecue sauce pumping station.\u00a0 It will be my responsibility to hose down the marchers so that His Honor can swallow them quickly and enjoyably.\u00a0 I hope he notes that I\u2019ve selected the roasted garlic and lemon-flavored sauce this season.\u00a0 It adds just the right touch of piquance to the flavor of what the First Selectman likes to call \u201cDunwich sushi.\u201d\u00a0 Oh, he\u2019s so droll.\u00a0 Who says Great Old Ones have no sense of humor?\u00a0 Well, gotta go.\u00a0 The snow, it calls me.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
