I don’t know why I would read an article in Vox magazine entitled “This is the most populist Oscars in a long time.\u00a0 So why doesn\u2019t it feel like it?<\/a>“<\/em>\u00a0 \u00a0I guess it\u2019s because sometimes I wonder what Hollywood thinks about its own destruction.\u00a0 I really should stop wondering.\u00a0 But anyway.<\/p>\n

This article is centered around a recent Saturday Night Live skit<\/a> about how no one can name any movies in the last five years.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an interesting problem for me, a film critic, to think about. I watch more movies in a year than some people watch in a lifetime, and hear about hundreds more. The situation is different for most ordinary folks. In the SNL sketch, Yang asks Pascal to \u201cname three movies from the past five years.\u201d Stunned by the challenge, Pascal ventures, \u201cOh, wow. Three? Okay.\u201d He contemplates, and comes up with Top Gun. Then he tries another: \u201cThe Hangover?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThat was 20 years ago,\u201d Yang says.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Night … Man,\u201d Pascal says.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cSounds like you\u2019re just saying words. Come on, all you need is one,\u201d Yang coaxes. \u201cCan\u2019t you just name one more movie?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cNope,\u201d Pascal says, resigned.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s right!\u201d Yang crows, jubilantly. \u201cNope! You won the speed round!\u201d\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

So, this is supposed to be funny but it\u2019s just reality.\u00a0 Hollywood can no longer make a good movie.\u00a0 At this point if one happens it\u2019s an accident.\u00a0 All we\u2019re left with are sequels and superheroes.\u00a0 When they stray away from those mainstays we end up with a dreary story about tortured people that have some affliction like transgenderism or Tourette\u2019s syndrome who we\u2019re supposed to cheer on as they bravely struggle to force the world to struggle along with them.\u00a0 Or maybe it\u2019s a genre film; science fiction or film noir where the protagonists are transgender or have Tourette\u2019s syndrome and the people who aren\u2019t transgender or don\u2019t have Tourette\u2019s syndrome are the evil villains.\u00a0 Or it\u2019s a story about lesbian or gay love.\u00a0 Or it\u2019s a documentary about a woman who was being kept down by \u201cthe man\u201d but now she\u2019s the head of a multi-national non-profit that makes bean bag furniture for everyday people.\u00a0 Or it\u2019s a documentary about a mostly peaceful riot during the Summer of George Floyd.\u00a0 Or best of all, maybe it\u2019ll be another story about slavery in the antebellum South.\u00a0 What a joy that would be!<\/p>\n

But, no!\u00a0 The authoress then reveals the real problem, it\u2019s just poor marketing!\u00a0 So, get that.\u00a0 In a world in which you are bombarded with ads on every device you can possibly own, on every site you enter, giant media companies aren\u2019t able to tell you they have a movie coming out.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe abundance of options and possibilities tend to strip the context and intentionality away from the viewing experience; you didn\u2019t have to talk to your friends about what movie you wanted to see, buy a ticket, and create an experience out of it. Now it all just flows toward you, content in an endless stream.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is gibberish.\u00a0 I suspect this woman was dropped on her head at some point in the past and never recovered her wits.\u00a0 Or maybe she thinks we were.\u00a0 Of course, people heard about movies from friends.\u00a0 The problem is all the movies are now unwatchable so our friends don\u2019t have anything to tell us.\u00a0 It\u2019s like what happened to broadcast television.\u00a0 The profit model changed so they stopped making things that were good and filled up the time with reality shows and police procedurals where the police are all young women who have really nice hair and clothes and only arrest straight white men who are keeping the BIPoCs, LGBTQ and women \u201cdown.\u201d<\/p>\n

There are no good movies to see.\u00a0 Even the superhero movies have become infested with woke characters and plots.\u00a0 And that why Top Gun made a bazillion dollars last year. \u00a0It was an old-fashioned movie with a plot and likeable characters and it didn\u2019t show you anything weird that you had to make believe you liked.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s okay if you haven\u2019t seen most of the Oscar nominees, or even heard of them. In 2023, that probably means you live a normal, well-balanced life, one full of going outside to toss around a softball and maybe, I don\u2019t know, reading books and whatever normal people do. But if you find yourself wondering why you can\u2019t name three movies that came out in the past five years, remember, it\u2019s not just the movies\u2019 fault \u2014 and it\u2019s a fixable problem, with a little effort.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

It’s not a fixable problem because Hollywood cannot be fixed.\u00a0 It has been in a death spiral and that\u2019s now approaching impact.\u00a0 When it splats it will leave a lot of stupid emotional people without jobs.\u00a0 Good.<\/p>\n

It can only be replaced by something willing to provide entertainment that people are willing to pay for and willing to watch.\u00a0 And that is why no one with half a brain will be watching the Oscars this year or any other year.\u00a0 Pass the popcorn.<\/p>\n
