Having now lived the majority of my life in New England, I\u2019ve come to associate April Fool\u2019s Day with twenty plus inches of heavy wet snow.\u00a0 Not because that is the inevitable result on April First but because it is the ironic result that would best capture the spirit of this odd \u201choliday.\u201d<\/p>\n

Well this year\u2019s edition is a less dramatic but more typical version with cold rain and cool refreshing air that I find suits my mood today.\u00a0 I wandered out of the living room onto the lower balcony and breathed in that freshness and approved of the weather and the day and surveyed the soggy battered appearance of the \u201cestate.\u201d\u00a0 The forest is full of dead leaves and sodden moss.\u00a0 The fields are covered in brown grass and sodden moss.\u00a0 Here and there a few daffodils have blossomed.\u00a0 The pond is swollen with the rain and the mallards are nowhere in sight.\u00a0 Maybe ducks are just as sensible as I am and don\u2019t like to get wet.\u00a0 Maybe they\u2019re holed up in an old coyote den waiting out the rain.\u00a0 Naturalists would deny such a thing but I like to think that the animals that inhabit my habitat share in my virtues and vices.\u00a0 Why shouldn\u2019t the ducks crave warmth and eschew getting wet?\u00a0 Very possibly the drake is often scolded by the duchess for forgetting to take out the trash on time and neglecting to repair the flushometer in the spare upstairs bathroom in a timely manner.\u00a0 To me all these things seem possible and in some way fitting.\u00a0 Although I somewhat doubt that the ducks have a spare upstairs bathroom.\u00a0 Probably just the one.<\/p>\n

April First is a pivot point.\u00a0 For me it is the essential beginning of spring.\u00a0 Even the rare April First blizzard is a rearguard sally during winter\u2019s final retreat into history.\u00a0 From now on it will be yard work to repair the ravages of winter and take advantage of the short growing season to grow the vegetables and flowers that we hope to produce.\u00a0 And it\u2019s the signal for outdoor activities of all sorts; more walks in the forest and the search for photographic opportunities.\u00a0 It\u2019s a very hopeful time of the year and even impossible hopes seem less impossible after the First of April.<\/p>\n

The week ended well.\u00a0 Today should be a good day to work on the book.\u00a0 Well, let\u2019s see where that goes.\u00a0 I look at the headlines and it\u2019s Trump, Trump, Trump as far as the eye can see.\u00a0 Well, I haven\u2019t got anything interesting or useful to add to that circus.\u00a0 The only thing worth noting is that the term banana republic is now completely ubiquitous and rightly so.\u00a0 Later on, something may occur to me and I\u2019ll put virtual pen to virtual paper but for now I think I\u2019ll put on a raincoat and boots and be at play in the fields of the Lord.\u00a0 But maybe I should take my cue from the ducks and cozy up next to the duchess where it\u2019s warm.\u00a0 \u201cWhat?\u00a0 I said I\u2019ll fix that flushometer next week!\u00a0 Sheesh.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
