Over the course of over fifty-five years of television viewing I have become jaded and much of what I once felt was entertaining has lost its thrill.\u00a0 For instance, as a young kid I was convinced that \u201cThe Twilight Zone\u201d was not only great acting and entertainment but also intellectually dazzling.\u00a0 I thought that \u201cFlipper\u201d was top-notch adventure and \u201cLost in Space\u201d was cutting edge science fiction.\u00a0 Ah, youth.<\/p>\n

But one thing has remained constant from the early sixties to the present day.\u00a0 And that is the Shatner.\u00a0 From my first sighting of him on the Twilight Zone as the panicked lunatic on \u201cNightmare at 20,000 Feet\u201d to his every close-up on the original \u201cStar Trek\u201d TV series to his every career iteration he has distinguished himself as the World\u2019s Greatest Bad Actor.\u00a0 No one can compare.<\/p>\n

And along the way I\u2019ve cheered him on.\u00a0 I thrilled to the scene where he agonized about \u201closing command\u201d when the transporter separated him into \u201cGood Kirk and Bad Kirk\u201d and he knew that \u201cBad Kirk\u201d was muy macho and he, \u201cGood Kirk,\u201d was a wimp.\u00a0 I was transfixed as marooned Kirk shouted up to the sky, \u201cKHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!!!!\u201d\u00a0 And I fought back the nausea listening to his riveting rendition of Elton John\u2019s \u201cRocket Man<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s been a wild ride.<\/p>\n

But his greatest role is one that few have seen or remarked on.\u00a0 In 1984 he starred in a made for tv movie called \u201cSecrets of a Married Man.\u201d\u00a0 In it he is an engineer who is going through a mid-life crisis.\u00a0 His job is on the line due to a difficult project.\u00a0 He\u2019s stressed out and his wife is busy with the kids.\u00a0 He starts having sex with hookers.\u00a0 There are a number of hilarious Shatner overacting scenes that turn what are supposed to be serious problems into over the top comedy.\u00a0 In one scene he\u2019s in the shower and looks down and starts spazzing out and choking out the words \u201cOh my God!\u201d\u00a0 In the next scene his doctor is telling him he just has a rash on his genitals and he shouldn\u2019t worry. \u00a0Another gem is Shatner driving down the main street with his wife next to him in the car and all the hookers are calling out greetings to him by his first name (Chris) and him claiming that it\u2019s some kind of standard hooker greeting.\u00a0 Ah, if only the Oscar went to the deserving.<\/p>\n

But time is running out.\u00a0 Shatner was born March 22, 1931.\u00a0 In a few days he\u2019ll be 87.\u00a0 One day soon the world will wake up to the news that the Shat is no more.\u00a0 And on that day, I will mourn.\u00a0 But in the meantime, it\u2019s comforting to know that in this world of relativism and revisionist propaganda the gold standard for something has stood the test of time and will be there immortalized in all its tacky splendor, the life work of William Shatner.\u00a0 Well done Shatner, well done.<\/p>\n
