When we got to the Visitor’s Center at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon this fellow was giving me the evil eye from a low hanging perch on a nearby tree.\u00a0 He was croaking some kind of a challenge at me.\u00a0 He probably wanted me to acknowledge his suzerainty over the whole South Rim of the Grand Canyon.\u00a0 These ravens are enormous and don\u2019t caw like crows.\u00a0 They croak and bellow.\u00a0 And anything you leave loose in your campsite is fair game.\u00a0 They\u2019ll steal anything smaller than a duffel bag that\u2019s interesting looking, especially anything shiny or edible.\u00a0 And just about anything is one or the other from their point of view.\u00a0 One sat in a tree above our campsite and serenaded us with abuse at sunset and again at sunrise.\u00a0 All in all, a very impressive creature.\u00a0 Almost thirty years ago I read a book called \u201cRavens in Winter\u201d by a guy named Bernd Heinrich.\u00a0 He was studying ravens in Maine.\u00a0 He described how intelligent and social the birds were.\u00a0 I\u2019ve always wanted to see them up close.\u00a0 Now I\u2019m jealous of those living in the west where they are very common.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
