{"id":2575,"date":"2018-04-09T21:42:35","date_gmt":"2018-04-10T01:42:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/?p=2575"},"modified":"2018-04-11T14:06:25","modified_gmt":"2018-04-11T18:06:25","slug":"interacting-in-the-brave-new-world-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/index.php\/2018\/04\/09\/interacting-in-the-brave-new-world-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Interacting in the Brave New World \u2013 Part 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the end of the first installment of this series I said \u201cNext time we\u2019ll talk about how you talk to a prospective wife.\u201d\u00a0 Well, I think I\u2019ll leave that one for a later date, mostly because my dating advice is more than forty years out of date.\u00a0 Instead I think I\u2019ll talk about how to interact with the \u201cright-wing.\u201d\u00a0 I put that in scare quotes because even mapping that territory is so fraught with contention that I\u2019m liable to set off a turf war just trying to alphabetize the list.\u00a0 So, I will speak in generalities and I will err on the side of caution.<\/p>\n<p>My handy-dandy guidelines for interacting within the right-wing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t get involved in intra-mural wars. If two right-wing factions are at odds let them settle it themselves.\u00a0 The last thing anyone needs is you playing marriage counselor to the Alt-Right.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t ever discuss family squabbles with the enemy. That includes \u201cneutral\u201d parties who claim to be \u201cconservatives.\u201d\u00a0 Look at the helpful NeverTrumpers at the National Review and the Weekly Standard.\u00a0 They\u2019re just full of good advice for us poor rubes in Trump Land.<\/li>\n<li>You don\u2019t have to agree with anything that you consider morally wrong just to \u201cfit in.\u201d Of course, that doesn\u2019t mean you have to declare jihad against those who disagree with you.\u00a0 Just walk away.\u00a0 Find a camp where you are comfortable.\u00a0 It\u2019s a very big world.<\/li>\n<li>Going along with the last point don\u2019t attack to your right. Even if you disagree with someone you consider too extreme, don\u2019t take it upon yourself to police the right.\u00a0 Let the lefties fight their own battles.\u00a0 Don\u2019t do it for them.<\/li>\n<li>Whenever it is at all possible, support right wing groups financially, politically, socially and with morale boosting. And especially do it at the expense of the left-wing.\u00a0 And do it even if it has a penalty in terms of quality, cost or status.\u00a0 Think of it as part of the war effort.\u00a0 Eventually it should pay dividends.<\/li>\n<li>Be slow to take offense. There are many folks out there who let zeal get the better of their manners.\u00a0 I try to add an extra dollop of courtesy when corresponding on-line with someone I don\u2019t know well.\u00a0 Many people have a very excitable writing style when discussing highly inflammatory subject matter, which includes just about everything likely to come up in one of these political discussions.\u00a0 Tread lightly.\u00a0 Sometimes it\u2019s best to agree to disagree and even let the other guy get the last word and just walk away.\u00a0 Winning the internet is a lonely assignment.<\/li>\n<li>And finally, have fun.
