There\u2019s a title searching for an answer.\u00a0 What will happen?\u00a0 What could happen?<\/p>\n
Almost anything could happen.\u00a0 Suppose enough of the Uniparty Republicans get nervous about not sending enough money to Ukraine.\u00a0 Maybe they\u2019ll vote for the Democratic Minority Leader to be Speaker.\u00a0 I\u2019m sure it could happen.\u00a0 Maybe Matt Gaetz and Jim Jordan or Steve Scalise sit down and hammer out something that will keep Gaetz satisfied but won\u2019t shut down the government.\u00a0 Maybe that could happen.\u00a0 The wackiest outcome would be Trump selected as Speaker by the Republican House members.\u00a0 I give this outcome something like one in a hundred thousand odds.\u00a0 And even if this was just a temporary situation, I\u2019d love to see it happen.\u00a0 The heads exploding in both parties would be tremendously entertaining.\u00a0 And let\u2019s face it.\u00a0 Schadenfreude is just about the only thing left to enjoy about our situation.\u00a0 After all, we\u2019re all going rapidly broke while Joe Biden fiddles and burns everything down.<\/p>\n
But it seems fair to say that whoever becomes the Speaker of the House should have to align himself with the Republican voters in this country and all the polls show that the one person that the clear majority of Republicans see as their leader is Donald Trump.\u00a0 Both the Republican Speaker of the House and the Senate Minority Leader should be taking their marching orders from Trump.\u00a0 And of course, that goes against their individual financial interests.\u00a0 Because most of the slush money they get comes from voting for government policies for special interest groups like the defense contractors and banks and pharmaceutical manufacturers.\u00a0 Doing the right thing for our country is way, way down near the bottom of their list of priorities.<\/p>\n
But McCarthy getting bounced and all the anti-Trump congress critters like Liz Cheney getting primaried is starting to make an impression on the Republican politicos.\u00a0 I think it\u2019s starting to dawn on them that the gravy train could be over if they don\u2019t move \u201cdoing the right thing for the country\u201d much higher up the list.\u00a0 And they don\u2019t even have to believe in what they\u2019re doing.\u00a0 They can just follow the herd as Gaetz and others tell them what they must do to stay employed.\u00a0 If Gaetz and his colleagues are clever enough they can convince the bulk of the Republicans that they have the leverage to put the screws to Joe Biden without paying a price in 2024.\u00a0 After all Biden is despised by the majority of the country.\u00a0 Making him pay a high political price for the problems he\u2019s already caused should be within the abilities of moderately intelligent politicians.\u00a0 Precedents are lying around in the recent electoral past.\u00a0 The 2008 campaign that was a referendum against George W Bush should suffice as a template.<\/p>\n
So, I\u2019ve laid out the most optimistic scenario.\u00a0 Everything more pessimistic is also out there.\u00a0 Normally at this point I\u2019d state that my guess was much, much gloomier.\u00a0 But I don\u2019t know, I don\u2019t feel that down on the outcome.\u00a0 It could be senility or something but I\u2019m willing to see how this thing plays out.\u00a0 Let Gaetz and his cohort sit down with Jordan and see where this is going to go.\u00a0 Maybe a few good men can get something done in the cesspool that is DC.<\/p>\n
