The first frost is due Tuesday night.\u00a0 I\u2019ve heard there could be snow or freezing rain.\u00a0 That\u2019s Halloween, so everyone is hoping it holds off until the kids are home from their candy raids.\u00a0 Of course, a dusting of snow would be alright but freezing rain would be awful.\u00a0 I remember many years ago when my children were still small and I walked them through the sidewalks of the small town common where we lived at the time when a freezing rain began.\u00a0 Their plastic pumpkin candy containers filled up with rain and ruined their treats.\u00a0 But worse still they were frozen to the bone by the time we walked home.\u00a0 Truly a miserable end to an exciting night for the young.<\/p>\n
I had the family over today for a kid\u2019s birthday party.\u00a0 Amazing.\u00a0 Remarkable how much good will and high spirits can be created with some pasta and meat sauce.\u00a0 Well, there was ice cream cake too.\u00a0 I guess that could be an extenuating circumstance.\u00a0 I also learned that a pool table will turn into a Nok Hockey table if you allow for the inventiveness of small children.\u00a0 Instead of a pool cue they use billiard balls as paddles to shoot the other balls back and forth at each other.\u00a0 Of course, it was probably a little dangerous.\u00a0 Some small hands might have been pinched while they played and more than a few times the balls came flying off the table and bounced and banged their way across the room.\u00a0 But they had a good time.\u00a0 Later on, we had a couple of normal games with the older kids and I tried to teach Princess Sack of Potatoes how to use the cue to make a shot but let\u2019s just say that her way of clearing the table seemed to make her happier.\u00a0 So, all good stuff.<\/p>\n
And we found an old book of \u201cScary Stories\u201d that I had read to my kids all those years ago.\u00a0 And I heard about how scary my delivery had been.\u00a0 And some approved of those convincing dramatics and some had been too afraid.\u00a0 And I remembered the occasion so many years ago and it surprised me that they still remembered the details.\u00a0 And so, I offered the book to the children\u2019s mothers and told them to use their own judgement as to when the children were old enough for the story of \u201cThe Big Toe.\u201d<\/p>\n
So, kids are still kids.\u00a0 Even with all the nonsense that\u2019s been introduced to ruin them.\u00a0 They still enjoy being scared by a ghost story and misusing their parents\u2019 toys and all the same things that we did.\u00a0 You can still enjoy being a parent and grandparent and a kid.\u00a0 It\u2019s just a lot more expensive.\u00a0 But that\u2019s nothing new.<\/p>\n
But something has changed in the last fifty years.\u00a0 Our government doesn\u2019t want any more kids.\u00a0 At least not ones whose parents were born here.\u00a0 Nobody is planning for them to have jobs and lives and eventually kids of their own.\u00a0 Slowly but surely.\u00a0 Methodically and cold-bloodedly, they\u2019ve strangled off the world that produced all that living.\u00a0 All the jobs that were located in factories and plants that produced everything from shoes to phones to washing machines no longer exist.\u00a0 Or rather they exist in China, Thailand and Malaysia.\u00a0 Our kids and grandkids are out of luck.\u00a0 They\u2019re not needed.\u00a0 They\u2019re not even needed as engineers, architects, managers or accountants.\u00a0 Even those things have been outsourced.\u00a0 The message is we\u2019re not needed and we\u2019re not wanted.\u00a0 There\u2019s no room for us and certainly not for any of our kids.<\/p>\n
And yet the American people haven\u2019t said no.\u00a0 Well, some of them have said no.\u00a0 But there hasn\u2019t been an upswelling of anger at seeing their country chloroformed.\u00a0 I find this remarkable.\u00a0 Are we that blind?\u00a0 Are we that stupid?\u00a0 I guess we are.\u00a0 What seems obvious to me is that unless this changes very soon there won\u2019t be much left.\u00a0 Just the managerial elite and their servants.\u00a0 And I\u2019m sure they\u2019ll keep squeezing even that fraction down to a minimum.<\/p>\n
So human capital is no longer the thing.\u00a0 Well, we\u2019ve been told over and over again that \u201cour democracy\u201d is a precious thing.\u00a0 If the powers that be aren\u2019t careful, they may find out what raw democracy means when it goes looking for the hand that shut off the work that used to keep it busy.\u00a0 Idle hands are the devil\u2019s workshop.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
