{"id":2760,"date":"2018-04-29T11:05:59","date_gmt":"2018-04-29T15:05:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/?p=2760"},"modified":"2018-04-29T11:05:59","modified_gmt":"2018-04-29T15:05:59","slug":"29apr2018-quote-of-the-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/index.php\/2018\/04\/29\/29apr2018-quote-of-the-day\/","title":{"rendered":"29APR2018 &#8211; Quote of the Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>I have always thought Treasure Island is the quintessential adventure story for boys.\u00a0 The film versions\u00a0 are also good fun but reading the story I find can almost make me feel twelve years old again.\u00a0 Well maybe fourteen anyway.\u00a0 Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.<\/strong><\/p>\n<pre>3\r\n\r\nThe Black Spot\r\n\r\nABOUT noon I stopped at the captain's door with some cooling drinks\r\nand medicines. He was lying very much as we had left him, only a little\r\nhigher, and he seemed both weak and excited.\r\n\r\n\u201cJim,\u201d he said, \u201cyou're the only one here that's worth anything, and you\r\nknow I've been always good to you. Never a month but I've given you a\r\nsilver fourpenny for yourself. And now you see, mate, I'm pretty low,\r\nand deserted by all; and Jim, you'll bring me one noggin of rum, now,\r\nwon't you, matey?\u201d\r\n\r\n\u201cThe doctor--\u201d I began.\r\n\r\nBut he broke in cursing the doctor, in a feeble voice but heartily.\r\n\u201cDoctors is all swabs,\u201d he said; \u201cand that doctor there, why, what do\r\nhe know about seafaring men? I been in places hot as pitch, and mates\r\ndropping round with Yellow Jack, and the blessed land a-heaving like the\r\nsea with earthquakes--what to the doctor know of lands like that?--and I\r\nlived on rum, I tell you. It's been meat and drink, and man and wife,\r\nto me; and if I'm not to have my rum now I'm a poor old hulk on a lee\r\nshore, my blood'll be on you, Jim, and that doctor swab\u201d; and he ran on\r\nagain for a while with curses. \u201cLook, Jim, how my fingers fidges,\u201d\r\n he continued in the pleading tone. \u201cI can't keep 'em still, not I. I\r\nhaven't had a drop this blessed day. That doctor's a fool, I tell you.\r\nIf I don't have a drain o' rum, Jim, I'll have the horrors; I seen some\r\non 'em already. I seen old Flint in the corner there, behind you; as\r\nplain as print, I seen him; and if I get the horrors, I'm a man that\r\nhas lived rough, and I'll raise Cain. Your doctor hisself said one glass\r\nwouldn't hurt me. I'll give you a golden guinea for a noggin, Jim.\u201d\r\n\r\nHe was growing more and more excited, and this alarmed me for my father,\r\nwho was very low that day and needed quiet; besides, I was reassured by\r\nthe doctor's words, now quoted to me, and rather offended by the offer\r\nof a bribe.\r\n\r\n\u201cI want none of your money,\u201d said I, \u201cbut what you owe my father. I'll\r\nget you one glass, and no more.\u201d\r\n\r\nWhen I brought it to him, he seized it greedily and drank it out.\r\n\r\n\u201cAye, aye,\u201d said he, \u201cthat's some better, sure enough. And now, matey,\r\ndid that doctor say how long I was to lie here in this old berth?\u201d\r\n\r\n\u201cA week at least,\u201d said I.\r\n\r\n\u201cThunder!\u201d he cried. \u201cA week! I can't do that; they'd have the black\r\nspot on me by then. The lubbers is going about to get the wind of me\r\nthis blessed moment; lubbers as couldn't keep what they got, and want to\r\nnail what is another's. Is that seamanly behaviour, now, I want to know?\r\nBut I'm a saving soul. I never wasted good money of mine, nor lost it\r\nneither; and I'll trick 'em again. I'm not afraid on 'em. I'll shake out\r\nanother reef, matey, and daddle 'em again.\u201d\r\n\r\nAs he was thus speaking, he had risen from bed with great difficulty,\r\nholding to my shoulder with a grip that almost made me cry out, and\r\nmoving his legs like so much dead weight. His words, spirited as they\r\nwere in meaning, contrasted sadly with the weakness of the voice in\r\nwhich they were uttered. He paused when he had got into a sitting\r\nposition on the edge.\r\n\r\n\u201cThat doctor's done me,\u201d he murmured. \u201cMy ears is singing. Lay me back.\u201d\r\n\r\nBefore I could do much to help him he had fallen back again to his\r\nformer place, where he lay for a while silent.\r\n\r\n\u201cJim,\u201d he said at length, \u201cyou saw that seafaring man today?\u201d\r\n\r\n\u201cBlack Dog?\u201d I asked.\r\n\r\n\u201cAh! Black Dog,\u201d says he. \u201cHE'S a bad un; but there's worse that put him\r\non. Now, if I can't get away nohow, and they tip me the black spot, mind\r\nyou, it's my old sea-chest they're after; you get on a horse--you can,\r\ncan't you? Well, then, you get on a horse, and go to--well, yes,\r\nI will!--to that eternal doctor swab, and tell him to pipe all\r\nhands--magistrates and sich--and he'll lay 'em aboard at the Admiral\r\nBenbow--all old Flint's crew, man and boy, all on 'em that's left. I was\r\nfirst mate, I was, old Flint's first mate, and I'm the on'y one as knows\r\nthe place. He gave it me at Savannah, when he lay a-dying, like as if I\r\nwas to now, you see. But you won't peach unless they get the black spot\r\non me, or unless you see that Black Dog again or a seafaring man with\r\none leg, Jim--him above all.\u201d\r\n\r\n\u201cBut what is the black spot, captain?\u201d I asked.\r\n\r\n\u201cThat's a summons, mate. I'll tell you if they get that.
