Dark energy forms the backbone of the idea of the \u201ccosmological constant\u201d\u2014first conceived by Albert Einstein in his General Theory of Relativity to refute the conception that the universe was actually static and not expanding or contracting.<br \/>\nWhen researchers in the 1990s discovered that the universe was not only expanding, but\u00a0<em>accelerating<\/em>\u00a0in its expansion,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/space\/deep-space\/a44776417\/study-contradicts-newton-einstein-theory-gravity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow ugc\">Einstein\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0\u201cuniversal constant\u201d (which he labeled lambda, or \u039b) became surprisingly relevant again. When plugged into equations used to understand the growth of the universe after the Big Bang (known as the Friedmann equations), scientists arrived at the modern \u201ccosmological constant.\u201d However, there\u2019s a couple problems\u2014scientists have never actually\u00a0<em>observed<\/em>\u00a0dark energy (hence the \u201cdark\u201d moniker) and the cosmological constant is pretty lousy at explaining observed phenomena.<br \/>\nBecause science abhors a epistemological vacuum, astrophysicists have instead explored other theories that could explain what\u2019s happening in the universe. In one of those theories, published in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/1475-7516\/2023\/12\/011\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow ugc\"><u>Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics<\/u><\/a>\u00a0in December of 2023, University of Copenhagen astrophysicist Jan Ambj\u00f8rn and Yoshiyuki Watabiki at the Tokyo Institute of Technology explore a novel idea that doesn\u2019t require the yet-undiscovered dark energy to explain the acceleration of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/space\/deep-space\/a46807202\/dark-matter-cosmic-web\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow ugc\">universe<\/a>, and negates the need for a cosmological constant as well.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, this new paper argues, our universe is actually swallowing up \u2018baby universes\u2019 as it expands.<br \/>\n\u201cThe main finding of our work is that the accelerated expansion of our universe, caused by the mysterious dark energy, might have a simple intuitive explanation,\u201d Ambj\u00f8rn\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/cosmology\/our-universe-is-merging-with-baby-universes-causing-it-to-expand-new-theoretical-study-suggests#:~:text=%22The%20main%20finding%20of%20our,model%2C%22%20lead%20study%20author%20Jan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow ugc\">tells LiveScience<\/a>, \u201cthe merging with so-called baby universes, and that a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/a40753268\/understanding-the-standard-model\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow ugc\">model<\/a>\u00a0for this might fit the data better than the standard cosmological model.\u201d<br \/>\nThe idea is deceptively simple\u2014as our universe grows, it absorbs other universes in its path, thereby \u201caccelerating\u201d its boundaries. Perceived by our telescopes, this would\u00a0<em>look<\/em>\u00a0like an increased acceleration of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/space\/telescopes\/a27285469\/universe-surprises-scientists-with-rapid-expansion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow ugc\">universal expansion<\/a>. When Ambj\u00f8rn and Watabiki ran the calculations for this \u2018baby universe\u2019 theory, the calculations fit more closely with real-life observations than those using the Standard Cosmological Model, the researchers claim.<br \/>\nThe paper also attempts to answer another\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/a46759612\/cheshire-cat-paradox\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow ugc\">mystery<\/a>\u00a0of the early universe called \u201ccosmological inflation,\u201d wherein the early universe rapidly expanded for some unknown reason. A current theory suggests that a hypothetical field, called the \u201cinflation field,\u201d drove this expansion, but this new paper suggests another mechanism could have been at work.<br \/>\n\u201cThe fact that the universe has expanded\u2026in a very short time, invites the suggestion that this expansion was caused by a collision with a larger universe, i.e. that it was really our Universe which was absorbed in another \u2018parent\u2019 universe,\u201d the paper reads. \u201cIt is difficult to judge if such a scenario could take place in a way that would actually solve the problems\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/space\/deep-space\/a43520938\/multiverse-theory-explained\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow ugc\">inflation<\/a>\u00a0was designed to solve, but one interesting aspect of such a scenario is that there is no need for an inflation field.\u201d<br \/>\nThis isn\u2019t the only theory that boldly eschews the need for a cosmological constant. In July of 2023,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/space\/deep-space\/a44302811\/expansion-of-universe-mirage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow ugc\">another paper<\/a>\u00a0argued that the expansion of the universe could simply be a mirage caused by the evolution of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/science\/a46814740\/freezing-water-electrons-in-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow ugc\">electrons<\/a>\u00a0and protons over immensely long time scales.<br \/>\nFor now, no alternative theory has dethroned dark energy and the cosmological\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/space\/a28455\/fundamental-constants-changing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow ugc\">constant<\/a>\u00a0as the best explanation of the universal acceleration. But it\u2019s always important to keep a cautiously open mind\u2014especially in science as cutting-edge as universal expansion. Sometimes interesting and helpful ideas can come from very odd place.
