{"id":27848,"date":"2024-03-05T05:00:18","date_gmt":"2024-03-05T10:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/?p=27848"},"modified":"2024-03-04T21:16:00","modified_gmt":"2024-03-05T02:16:00","slug":"2024-academy-awards-oppenheimer-and-what","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/05\/2024-academy-awards-oppenheimer-and-what\/","title":{"rendered":"2024 Academy Awards \u2013 Oppenheimer and What?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/96th_Academy_Awards\">96<sup>th<\/sup> Academy Awards<\/a> will take place March 10<sup>th<\/sup> 2024.\u00a0 Now I haven\u2019t watched any part of the Oscars in coming on twenty years.\u00a0 Even back in the early 2000\u2019s they had become unwatchable both for the virtue signaling that made up most of the spectacle and for the unbelievably low entertainment value of the movies selected as nominees.<\/p>\n<p>In the spirit of open mindedness I decided to take a look at the publicly available information on the movies that are up for the Best Picture award.\u00a0 Below are links to each of the nominees.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Fiction_(film)\">American Fiction<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anatomy_of_a_Fall\">Anatomy of a Fall<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barbie_(film)\">Barbie<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Holdovers\">The Holdovers<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Killers_of_the_Flower_Moon_(film)\">Killers of the Flower Moon<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maestro_(2023_film)\">Maestro<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oppenheimer_(film)\">Oppenheimer<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Past_Lives_(film)\">Past Lives<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Poor_Things_(film)\">Poor Things<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Zone_of_Interest_(film)\">The Zone of Interest<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You can check for yourself if your tastes may differ from mine.\u00a0 Most of them sound unwatchable.\u00a0 A multi-decade exploration of Leonard Bernstein\u2019s bisexuality or a courtroom trial to determine whether a wife killed her husband or he committed suicide or whether he just fell off a balcony with their blind son as the chief witness or several other even less interesting plots.<\/p>\n<p>I suppose a lot of older women might want to see Barbie.\u00a0 And I\u2019m sort of interested to see whether Oppenheimer is any good.\u00a0 But after those two movies there isn\u2019t much else.\u00a0 Interestingly, those two movies appear to be the only ones that made any money.\u00a0 The rest of them didn\u2019t even break even.\u00a0 And since the Marvel movies lost money last year does that mean Oppenheimer and Barbie are the only source of income for Hollywood in 2023?<\/p>\n<p>So my experiment in open-mindedness crashed and burned.\u00a0 Hollywood is no longer a thing.\u00a0 Other than maybe a source for genre movies (action\/adventure, sci-fi and comic book heroes) they\u2019ve basically moved away from a pretty large chunk of what used to be their audience.<\/p>\n<p>And it shows.\u00a0 This list of best picture nominees is made up of either vanity projects by arthouse directors or Hollywood virtue signaling vehicles.\u00a0 There\u2019s even that time honored chestnut, the Nazi Holocaust period piece (The Zone of Interest).<\/p>\n<p>So, I still haven\u2019t gotten around to watching Oppenheimer.\u00a0 I\u2019ve heard it\u2019s a mixed bag.\u00a0 It has some interesting things but it\u2019s more than bit too long.\u00a0 Eventually I\u2019ll watch it.\u00a0 But as for either watching the Oscars or any of these movies that ain\u2019t happening.\u00a0 In fact, I can\u2019t imagine that I\u2019ll ever have a reason for watching the Academy Awards ceremony again.\u00a0 Maybe if they were brave enough to make Ricky Gervais the emcee I might watch the compilation of his insults of the nominees.\u00a0 That I could see as being worthwhile.
