It was upon the 4th of March, as I have good reason to remember, that I<\/p>\n

rose somewhat earlier than usual, and found that Sherlock Holmes had not<\/p>\n

yet finished his breakfast. The landlady had become so accustomed to my<\/p>\n

late habits that my place had not been laid nor my coffee prepared. With<\/p>\n

the unreasonable petulance of mankind I rang the bell and gave a curt<\/p>\n

intimation that I was ready. Then I picked up a magazine from the table<\/p>\n

and attempted to while away the time with it, while my companion munched<\/p>\n

silently at his toast. One of the articles had a pencil mark at the<\/p>\n

heading, and I naturally began to run my eye through it.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Its somewhat ambitious title was \u201cThe Book of Life,\u201d and it attempted to<\/p>\n

show how much an observant man might learn by an accurate and systematic<\/p>\n

examination of all that came in his way. It struck me as being a<\/p>\n

remarkable mixture of shrewdness and of absurdity. The reasoning was<\/p>\n

close and intense, but the deductions appeared to me to be far-fetched<\/p>\n

and exaggerated. The writer claimed by a momentary expression, a twitch<\/p>\n

of a muscle or a glance of an eye, to fathom a man\u2019s inmost thoughts.<\/p>\n

Deceit, according to him, was an impossibility in the case of one<\/p>\n

trained to observation and analysis. His conclusions were as infallible<\/p>\n

as so many propositions of Euclid. So startling would his results appear<\/p>\n

to the uninitiated that until they learned the processes by which he had<\/p>\n

arrived at them they might well consider him as a necromancer.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cFrom a drop of water,\u201d said the writer, \u201ca logician could infer the<\/p>\n

possibility of an Atlantic or a Niagara without having seen or heard of<\/p>\n

one or the other. So all life is a great chain, the nature of which is<\/p>\n

known whenever we are shown a single link of it. Like all other arts,<\/p>\n

the Science of Deduction and Analysis is one which can only be acquired<\/p>\n

by long and patient study nor is life long enough to allow any mortal<\/p>\n

to attain the highest possible perfection in it. Before turning to<\/p>\n

those moral and mental aspects of the matter which present the greatest<\/p>\n

difficulties, let the enquirer begin by mastering more elementary<\/p>\n

problems. Let him, on meeting a fellow-mortal, learn at a glance to<\/p>\n

distinguish the history of the man, and the trade or profession to<\/p>\n

which he belongs. Puerile as such an exercise may seem, it sharpens the<\/p>\n

faculties of observation, and teaches one where to look and what to look<\/p>\n

for. By a man\u2019s finger nails, by his coat-sleeve, by his boot, by his<\/p>\n

trouser knees, by the callosities of his forefinger and thumb, by his<\/p>\n

expression, by his shirt cuffs–by each of these things a man\u2019s calling<\/p>\n

is plainly revealed. That all united should fail to enlighten the<\/p>\n

competent enquirer in any case is almost inconceivable.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWhat ineffable twaddle!\u201d I cried, slapping the magazine down on the<\/p>\n

table, \u201cI never read such rubbish in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is it?\u201d asked Sherlock Holmes.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWhy, this article,\u201d I said, pointing at it with my egg spoon as I sat<\/p>\n

down to my breakfast. \u201cI see that you have read it since you have marked<\/p>\n

  1. I don\u2019t deny that it is smartly written. It irritates me though. It<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    is evidently the theory of some arm-chair lounger who evolves all these<\/p>\n

    neat little paradoxes in the seclusion of his own study. It is not<\/p>\n

    practical. I should like to see him clapped down in a third class<\/p>\n

    carriage on the Underground, and asked to give the trades of all his<\/p>\n

    fellow-travellers. I would lay a thousand to one against him.\u201d<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    \u201cYou would lose your money,\u201d Sherlock Holmes remarked calmly. \u201cAs for<\/p>\n

    the article I wrote it myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    \u201cYou!\u201d<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    \u201cYes, I have a turn both for observation and for deduction. The<\/p>\n

    theories which I have expressed there, and which appear to you to be so<\/p>\n

    chimerical are really extremely practical–so practical that I depend<\/p>\n

    upon them for my bread and cheese.\u201d<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    \u201cAnd how?\u201d I asked involuntarily.<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    \u201cWell, I have a trade of my own. I suppose I am the only one in the<\/p>\n

    world. I\u2019m a consulting detective, if you can understand what that is.<\/p>\n

    Here in London we have lots of Government detectives and lots of private<\/p>\n

    ones. When these fellows are at fault they come to me, and I manage to<\/p>\n

    put them on the right scent. They lay all the evidence before me, and I<\/p>\n

    am generally able, by the help of my knowledge of the history of<\/p>\n

    crime, to set them straight. There is a strong family resemblance about<\/p>\n

    misdeeds, and if you have all the details of a thousand at your finger<\/p>\n

    ends, it is odd if you can\u2019t unravel the thousand and first. Lestrade<\/p>\n

    is a well-known detective. He got himself into a fog recently over a<\/p>\n

    forgery case, and that was what brought him here.\u201d<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    \u201cAnd these other people?\u201d<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    \u201cThey are mostly sent on by private inquiry agencies. They are<\/p>\n

    all people who are in trouble about something, and want a little<\/p>\n

    enlightening. I listen to their story, they listen to my comments, and<\/p>\n

    then I pocket my fee.\u201d<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    \u201cBut do you mean to say,\u201d I said, \u201cthat without leaving your room you<\/p>\n

    can unravel some knot which other men can make nothing of, although they<\/p>\n

    have seen every detail for themselves?\u201d<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    \u201cQuite so. I have a kind of intuition that way. Now and again a case<\/p>\n

    turns up which is a little more complex. Then I have to bustle about and<\/p>\n

    see things with my own eyes. You see I have a lot of special knowledge<\/p>\n

    which I apply to the problem, and which facilitates matters wonderfully.<\/p>\n

    Those rules of deduction laid down in that article which aroused your<\/p>\n

    scorn, are invaluable to me in practical work. Observation with me is<\/p>\n

    second nature. You appeared to be surprised when I told you, on our<\/p>\n

    first meeting, that you had come from Afghanistan.\u201d<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    \u201cYou were told, no doubt.\u201d<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    \u201cNothing of the sort. I _knew_ you came from Afghanistan. From long<\/p>\n

    habit the train of thoughts ran so swiftly through my mind, that I<\/p>\n

    arrived at the conclusion without being conscious of intermediate steps.<\/p>\n

    There were such steps, however. The train of reasoning ran, \u2018Here is a<\/p>\n

    gentleman of a medical type, but with the air of a military man. Clearly<\/p>\n

    an army doctor, then. He has just come from the tropics, for his face is<\/p>\n

    dark, and that is not the natural tint of his skin, for his wrists are<\/p>\n

    fair. He has undergone hardship and sickness, as his haggard face says<\/p>\n

    clearly. His left arm has been injured. He holds it in a stiff and<\/p>\n

    unnatural manner. Where in the tropics could an English army doctor have<\/p>\n

    seen much hardship and got his arm wounded? Clearly in Afghanistan.\u2019 The<\/p>\n

    whole train of thought did not occupy a second. I then remarked that you<\/p>\n

    came from Afghanistan, and you were astonished.\u201d<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    \u201cIt is simple enough as you explain it,\u201d I said, smiling. \u201cYou remind<\/p>\n

    me of Edgar Allen Poe\u2019s Dupin. I had no idea that such individuals did<\/p>\n

    exist outside of stories.\u201d<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Sherlock Holmes rose and lit his pipe. \u201cNo doubt you think that you are<\/p>\n

    complimenting me in comparing me to Dupin,\u201d he observed. \u201cNow, in my<\/p>\n

    opinion, Dupin was a very inferior fellow. That trick of his of breaking<\/p>\n

    in on his friends\u2019 thoughts with an apropos remark after a quarter of<\/p>\n

    an hour\u2019s silence is really very showy and superficial. He had some<\/p>\n

    analytical genius, no doubt; but he was by no means such a phenomenon as<\/p>\n

    Poe appeared to imagine.\u201d<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    \u201cHave you read Gaboriau\u2019s works?\u201d I asked. \u201cDoes Lecoq come up to your<\/p>\n

    idea of a detective?\u201d<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    Sherlock Holmes sniffed sardonically. \u201cLecoq was a miserable bungler,\u201d<\/p>\n

    he said, in an angry voice; \u201che had only one thing to recommend him, and<\/p>\n

    that was his energy. That book made me positively ill. The question was<\/p>\n

    how to identify an unknown prisoner. I could have done it in twenty-four<\/p>\n

    hours. Lecoq took six months or so. It might be made a text-book for<\/p>\n

    detectives to teach them what to avoid.\u201d<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    I felt rather indignant at having two characters whom I had admired<\/p>\n

    treated in this cavalier style. I walked over to the window, and stood<\/p>\n

    looking out into the busy street. \u201cThis fellow may be very clever,\u201d I<\/p>\n

    said to myself, \u201cbut he is certainly very conceited.\u201d<\/p>\n

     <\/p>\n

    \u201cThere are no crimes and no criminals in these days,\u201d he said,<\/p>\n

    querulously. \u201cWhat is the use of having brains in our profession. I know<\/p>\n

    well that I have it in me to make my name famous. No man lives or has<\/p>\n

    ever lived who has brought the same amount of study and of natural<\/p>\n

    talent to the detection of crime which I have done. And what is the<\/p>\n

    result? There is no crime to detect, or, at most, some bungling villainy<\/p>\n

    with a motive so transparent that even a Scotland Yard official can see<\/p>\n

    through it.\u201d<\/p>\n
