{"id":29060,"date":"2024-06-05T05:00:16","date_gmt":"2024-06-05T09:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/?p=29060"},"modified":"2024-06-04T23:50:26","modified_gmt":"2024-06-05T03:50:26","slug":"do-the-right-thing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/index.php\/2024\/06\/05\/do-the-right-thing\/","title":{"rendered":"Do the Right Thing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Washington Post lost $77 million last year.\u00a0 Now the paper\u2019s owner Jeff Bezos spends $77 million on having his bald head waxed every month so the amount of money is almost inconsequential.\u00a0 But the fact that they lost half of their subscription base was just too embarrassing and so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/story\/washington-post-shakeup\">Bezos brought in a hatchet man as publisher and now he has given the paper\u2019s first female executive editor; Sally Buzbee the boot<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Well, the newsroom is very unhappy.\u00a0 And what is there number one worry?\u00a0 <strong>Loss of diversity!<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>\u201cI don\u2019t think she deserved to go out this way,\u201d the first staffer told me, noting that in conversations with their colleagues, people \u201cdon\u2019t feel good about the fact that the first female executive editor of The Washington Post got a one paragraph goodbye note at 8:30 p.m. on a Sunday, and that <strong>she\u2019s being replaced by more white men we don\u2019t know.<\/strong>\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>\u201cEveryone was pretty shocked with your email last night,\u201d one reporter said at the meeting, according to a source present. The reporter suggested that \u201cthe most cynical interpretation sort of feels like you chose two of your buddies to come in and help run the Post, <strong>and we now have four white men running three newsrooms<\/strong>,\u201d and expressed surprise at this development given Lewis\u2019s prior commitments to diversity.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Later in the meeting, another reporter asked Lewis whether \u201cany women or people of color were interviewed and seriously considered for either of these positions,\u201d a question that prompted applause.<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Unfortunately, their boss is a little more concerned with the lack of readers wanting to read the written product produced by this much vaunted diversity:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>At one point Lewis was asked whether he was intentionally bringing in people who come from a different culture than the Post. \u201c<strong>We are losing large amounts of money. Your audience has halved in recent years. People are not reading your stuff. I can\u2019t sugarcoat it anymore,\u201d Lewis said<\/strong>. \u201cSo, I\u2019ve had to take decisive, urgent action to set us on a different path, sourcing talent that I have worked with that are the best of the best.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>\u201cDon\u2019t we need our brilliant social journalists and service journalists as embedded in our core product to make sure that people are actually reading the thing that\u2019s out at the center of the mission of the Washington Post?\u201d one staffer asked, to which Lewis replied, \u201c<strong>You haven\u2019t done it. I\u2019ve listened to the platitudes. Honestly, it\u2019s just not happening<\/strong>.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>\u201c<strong>The fact that Will Lewis keeps going to his network rather than plucking Washington Post leadership implies that he finds everyone lacking, and I think that\u2019s kind of the most disturbing thing,\u201d a second staffer told me<\/strong>.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>So, the Washington Post is no longer selling something people want to buy, threatening the jobs of everyone working there and all the drones working there care is that the people being sent in to save their jobs are white men!<\/p>\n<p>It might almost make you wonder if maybe this fixation on race and gender clouds their judgement in terms of their writing.<\/p>\n<p>I guess there\u2019s some hope in the fact that the publisher they brought in openly tells his employees that they are failing at their jobs and things have to change.\u00a0 Of course, what he probably really has to do is lower his costs by reducing his staff to an absolute minimum and pay them as little as possible.\u00a0 He\u2019s probably thinking he can buy an AI that will write, \u201cOrange Man bad\u201d for a small fraction of what he pays his Ivy League diversity hires.<\/p>\n<p>The truth is that the whole news business has been upended by the impact of Google on the advertising model and also the ubiquity of news and opinion across the internet threatens the very existence of the print news industry.\u00a0 Well, some of them will make it.\u00a0 Apparently, the New York Times has stabilized their subscriptions by adding digital accounts successfully so it can be done.\u00a0 But maybe there\u2019s no place for another New York Times.\u00a0 Maybe the Washington Post will have to go.\u00a0 As I said, Jeff Bezos can pay to keep open or close down the Washington Post without changing his profit statement even a single percent.\u00a0 But what will be interesting is how the delicate snowflakes react to the news that diversity doesn\u2019t pay the bills or give the owner a reason to keep the place going in the absence of profits.<\/p>\n<p>Now Christopher Rufo has become interested in the trials and tribulations of the Washington Post\u2019s attempt to return to profitability.\u00a0 And he\u2019s come up with a recommendation.\u00a0 Fire Taylor Lorenz.\u00a0 You may remember Taylor from the time she doxed the woman who runs Libs of TikTok.\u00a0 Because of this she is a very unpopular with a pretty good part of the American public.\u00a0 Rufo\u2019s point is that if the Washington Post wants to increase its potential reader pool maybe they should eliminate the more ethically challenged staff members.\u00a0 And that\u2019s the real reason for me writing this post.\u00a0 I just think it would be hilarious if they gave Taylor the boot.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Washington Post lost $77 million last year.\u00a0 Now the paper\u2019s owner Jeff Bezos spends $77 million on having his bald head waxed every month<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_mi_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[139,4574,4575,3655],"class_list":["post-29060","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-current-events","tag-fake-news","tag-jeff-bezos","tag-taylor-lorenz","tag-washington-post"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.4 -
