{"id":29247,"date":"2024-06-16T14:54:22","date_gmt":"2024-06-16T18:54:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/?p=29247"},"modified":"2024-06-16T14:54:22","modified_gmt":"2024-06-16T18:54:22","slug":"how-many-macromolecules-can-dance-on-the-head-of-a-pin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/index.php\/2024\/06\/16\/how-many-macromolecules-can-dance-on-the-head-of-a-pin\/","title":{"rendered":"How Many Macromolecules Can Dance on the Head of a Pin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s a very interesting discussion of Levinthal&#8217;s paradox.\u00a0 In a nutshell, the paradox is related to the almost infinite possibilities in the ways that a macromolecular protein can fold into its primary, secondary and tertiary shape versus the effortless way that proteins function in living thing.\u00a0 The author says the degrees of freedom inherent in a large protein molecule have been modelled and there are supposed to be 10<sup>300<\/sup> different shapes that the protein could assume.\u00a0 Now the point is that this number is so absurdly large that the chance of any particular protein molecule assuming the shape it needs in order to perform its biochemical function in a living cell within a short enough time to sustain the metabolic requirements of life seems impossible.<\/p>\n<p>Well I must admit that is a ridiculously large number.\u00a0 Someone did a guess at how many separate atoms there are in the observable universe and he came up with\u00a010<sup>82<\/sup>.\u00a0 So that gives you a feel for the absurdity of 10<sup>300<\/sup> .<\/p>\n<p>Basically this argument is supposed to demonstrate the unlikeliness of the genesis of life occurring again elsewhere in the universe.<\/p>\n<p>I guess I&#8217;m not sure what I think of this.\u00a0 While the large size of macromolecules render their physical properties subtle and hard to predict, nevertheless, they do possess these properties and these are exactly the properties needed to sustain life in the world we live in.<\/p>\n<p>If they occur on Earth then they could occur elsewhere.\u00a0 Now the point really is how could life occur in the first place if the exact sequence of amino acids and nucleic acids needed to make up the macromolecules of life are so absurdly complicated and the random forces involved in creating these exact molecules would be so blind?<\/p>\n<p>It seems what the paradox is hinting at is God.\u00a0 Well, I won&#8217;t argue with that.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Obscure Biochemical Paradox May Explain Why We Can&#039;t Find Alien Life\" width=\"783\" height=\"440\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/k_B9YP5nEWw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s a very interesting discussion of Levinthal&#8217;s paradox.\u00a0 In a nutshell, the paradox is related to the almost infinite possibilities in the ways that a<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_mi_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[5,3545],"tags":[587,4589,4590,165],"class_list":["post-29247","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-current-events","category-science","tag-god","tag-origin-of-life","tag-protein-folding","tag-science"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.4 -
