Summer Movie Talk \u2013 Part 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When reality collapses under a landslide of madness:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>POTUS exposed as a human vegetable<\/li>\n<li>Cost of living now requires selling kidneys for gas money<\/li>\n<li>Illegal aliens and homeless drug addicts now the two largest voting blocks in some blue states<\/li>\n<li>Kamala Harris imagining herself as president unencumbered by anyone wanting to vote for her.<\/li>\n<li>Morning Joe both extols Joe Biden as the sharpest he\u2019s ever been and begs him to step aside to avoid defeat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Well then, it\u2019s time to take off the pundit cap and try to enjoy life a little.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve always been partial to watching movies.\u00a0 My tastes probably fall somewhere in the middle.\u00a0 I\u2019m definitely not part of the avant-garde by any means.\u00a0 I\u2019ve never enjoyed Cin\u00e9ma verit\u00e9 and the various other European schools that abounded in the 1950s and 1960s.\u00a0 They always just looked like low budget crap that someone made with a home movie camera and no money.\u00a0 But by the same token I think that at least 80% of the output of Hollywood in its heyday was pretty poor stuff.<\/p>\n<p>I totally believe that cinema is not a single subject.\u00a0 There are several distinct things that get lumped together as movies.\u00a0 Hopefully they all contain the characteristic that they entertain.\u00a0 But beyond that I think one kind of movie makes you feel and another makes you think.\u00a0 Now that is not to say that a movie that makes you think doesn\u2019t also engage your emotions.\u00a0 That would be odd in a movie created by humans.\u00a0 But what I\u2019m indicating is that many, even most movies don\u2019t really make you think.\u00a0 And that is not to say that only high-brow art-house movies can delve into the human condition.\u00a0 Far from it.\u00a0 Even someone as populist and popular as Frank Capra can capture a character or a moment that makes you think about the big questions.<\/p>\n<p>So, I think I\u2019ll divide my discussions about movies into two main categories; entertainment and enlightenment.\u00a0 And let\u2019s start with entertainment.\u00a0 Because it is the summer and that is the season when we want to enjoy the beautiful weather and make believe that the world is a happy place where Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are just cartoon characters who dress in primary colors and get chased around by the Tasmanian Devil and eventually eaten.\u00a0 So, let\u2019s see.<\/p>\n<p>Well, first things first, we\u2019ll divide and conquer.\u00a0 Let\u2019s divide things into genres:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Science fiction<\/li>\n<li>Fantasy<\/li>\n<li>Action\/Adventure<\/li>\n<li>Comedy<\/li>\n<li>Drama<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Science Fiction<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll list what I think are among the best or the most popular or the most interesting sci-fi movies in approximately chronological order.\u00a0 I\u2019ve reviewed almost all of these movies so if you want my detailed opinion you can do a search on the site.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Destination: Moon<\/li>\n<li>The Thing from Another World<\/li>\n<li>Them!<\/li>\n<li>Invasion of the Body Snatchers<\/li>\n<li>The Time Machine<\/li>\n<li>The Day the Earth Stood Still<\/li>\n<li>War of the Worlds<\/li>\n<li>Forbidden Planet<\/li>\n<li>2001: A Space Odyssey<\/li>\n<li>Blade Runner<\/li>\n<li>Alien<\/li>\n<li>Terminator<\/li>\n<li>Starship Troopers<\/li>\n<li>Independence Day<\/li>\n<li>12 Monkeys<\/li>\n<li>Jurassic Park<\/li>\n<li>The Matrix<\/li>\n<li>Contact<\/li>\n<li>Firefly<\/li>\n<li>Serenity<\/li>\n<li>The Martian<\/li>\n<li>Dune<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now this is just my list.\u00a0 Your list will be different.\u00a0 I left out Star Trek and Star Wars.\u00a0 I consider Star Wars fantasy and I consider Star Trek mostly awful.\u00a0 But the same could be said for several of the movies I put on my list.\u00a0 I hope my list will inspire a million spirited comments.\u00a0 Everyone has their favorites and their turkeys.\u00a0 Unlike politics we can all have our opinions on sci-fi movies without fear of doing any damage.\u00a0 Have at
