Baseball Movies<\/strong><\/p>\n

I started out with sports movies but that\u2019s a lot of territory.\u00a0 Football, basketball, boxing, horse racing and all kinds of other stuff.\u00a0 Baseball by itself is plenty for a list.<\/p>\n

Every kid of my generation loved baseball as much for playing as for watching the pros.\u00a0 We played some version of baseball on parish fields, sandlots, school yard asphalt or around the cars on our city streets.\u00a0 Baseball, stickball, punchball, slapball or softball.\u00a0 Wherever we could find the space and whoever was around we could always get together some kind of game.<\/p>\n

And of course we were rabid fans.\u00a0 Being from New York City we had to choose between the Yankees and the Mets.\u00a0 But even though I was a die-hard Yankees fan I went to the 7th<\/sup> game of the 1969 World Series and dutifully ripped up a square of turf when the Mets won it all for the first time and planted it in my backyard.\u00a0 A year later that chunk of grass died.\u00a0 It figured.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Sandlot\u201d is a cheat because it\u2019s more of a comedy about kids but it has a few things that broaden the appeal.<\/p>\n

\u201cField of Dreams\u201d and \u201cA League of Their Own\u201d both have cultural aspects that annoy me but both contain enough entertainment to allow me to include them on the list with only a grimace or two.\u00a0 \u201cThe Natural\u201d is overly sentimental but I consider it the best attempt to capture the mythological aspect of baseball in the American psyche; at least as it was before America was lobotomized in our era.\u00a0 \u201c61*\u201d is a more realistic look at the business of baseball legends.\u00a0 \u201cEight Men Out\u201d is another movie to look at the reality behind the legends.\u00a0 It\u2019s the story of the Black Sox Scandal.\u00a0 Excellently made.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m sure opinions will differ.\u00a0 Have at it.<\/p>\n
