{"id":29976,"date":"2024-08-09T05:00:20","date_gmt":"2024-08-09T09:00:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/?p=29976"},"modified":"2024-08-08T21:00:26","modified_gmt":"2024-08-09T01:00:26","slug":"thursdays-surcease-of-sorrow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/orionscoldfire.com\/index.php\/2024\/08\/09\/thursdays-surcease-of-sorrow\/","title":{"rendered":"Thursday\u2019s Surcease of Sorrow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I had today off.\u00a0 Ah, the glory.\u00a0 But I still had to get up early because we had visitors and as pontifex maximus I have prescribed duties that include invocations and vague mumblings that render me canonically relevant but still slightly insane.<\/p>\n<p>But it was good to be free for the day.\u00a0 I spent time with the grandchildren and Camera Girl as she presided over mass quantities of juvenile comfort food (macaroni with cheese and grilled cheese sandwiches) and really bad kids\u2019 movies (the 2021 \u201cTom and Jerry\u201d movie and that monstrosity, \u201cAnts\u201d that Woody Allen, of all people, was in).\u00a0 They taught me a game called, \u201cSwim, fishy, swim\u201d which is basically a version of tag or red light, green light.\u00a0 Then we broke out the card games but other than war I didn\u2019t know these other games.\u00a0 They used non-standard decks of cards and weird rules.<\/p>\n<p>While playing war I discovered that their reaction time is a lot faster than mine is now.\u00a0 It is humbling to be in the presence of neurons that fire perfectly.\u00a0 Old age is not for sissies.\u00a0 But at least I was able to correct them in their use of the subjunctive mood.\u00a0 Of course, I don\u2019t think the subjunctive is still acknowledged anymore in grammar school.\u00a0 In fact, I don\u2019t think they teach grammar in grammar school anymore.\u00a0 But I digress.\u00a0 It was good to be among the young and away from Dunwichian responsibilities.\u00a0 I still have five or six days of horror beginning tomorrow but a day off was great.<\/p>\n<p>Of the various things going on I thought the most interesting development was the background on Gov. Tim Walz\u2019s military service.\u00a0 From what I read Walz retired out of his National Guard unit after he was notified that his unit was being deployed to Iraq in 2005.\u00a0 And at the time he was the ranking non-commissioned officer in the unit.\u00a0 I <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mRLiQNR4Yrc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">listened to a video where Megyn Kelly interviewed<\/a> Tom Behrends, another non-commissioned officer from Walz\u2019s National Guard unit, and he basically called Walz a coward for refusing to lead his unit into combat.\u00a0 Never having served myself I\u2019d be very interested in getting the opinions of those on this site who have served as to whether what Behrends says is reasonable.\u00a0 What is the moral responsibility of a National Guard leader when his unit is called up for war?\u00a0 How prevalent would this kind of reaction to deployment be?<\/p>\n<p>Now I dislike Walz because he was the governor during the George Floyd riots in Minneapolis and he never ordered the National Guard to halt the rioting, arson and plain murder that went on during those riots.\u00a0 I think he should be prosecuted for that.\u00a0 But apparently in Minnesota they\u2019re alright with that sort of thing.\u00a0 So, they should get as much of that as is humanly possible.\u00a0 In that sense it\u2019s like California or New York.\u00a0 But if Walz is running for Veep then his actions as governor should be fair game.\u00a0 So, reviewing what he did during the Floyd riots makes perfect sense.<\/p>\n<p>As for his refusal to be deployed to Iraq, I\u2019m interested in what knowledgeable have to say about it.<\/p>\n<p>Well, I better get some sleep.\u00a0 More fun and games tomorrow.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I had today off.\u00a0 Ah, the glory.\u00a0 But I still had to get up early because we had visitors and as pontifex maximus I have<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_mi_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[3344,4649],"class_list":["post-29976","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-current-events","tag-2024-elections","tag-tim-walz"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.4 -
